As a biochemist, I have all way read every study a dose of skepticism since the beginning of my career. I do agree with Trump gag order on government scientists..

what do you think of the cdc? has it protected the american people?

--I'm not sure. They do have a lot of epidemiologist. If there is an outbreak of something like Ebola, we need the epidemiologist to identify the spread, quarantine people, and ban people from travel to/from the affected area. But if I remember correctly, Obama did not allow the ban because his concerned about the economy of a third world country.

and what about the flu shoot, is it even worth it?

--personally, I have never and will never take the flu shoot. Around every five years, I get sick. But that is a good thing, acute inflammation once in a few years clear the body of precancerous cells. However, low grade chronic inflammation promotes cancer. So I live an anti-inflammation lifestyle

I do get vaccinate when I travel. But I only allow them to give me 1 vaccine at a time and come back at a later day.

Nine, you may be a biochemist (or maybe you work at a lab running blood samples), but you certainly are not a scientist. I have been in the sciences for nearly thirty years. The implementation of a blanket gag order on government scientists is chilling and antithetical to what science is. The sciences progress through the sharing of information. Cheetohead is trying to protect his ego by suppressing facts that may contradict his frequent ignorant statements.

Hello OP -- Could you explain a bit about what's involved in an "anti-inflamation lifestyle?" I've heard of things like turmeric, lemon water first thing in the morning, etc., but as with most of this stuff, I read a lot of conflicting studies (well, layperson synopsis').

Let me get this straight - you guys are asking personal health questions to some random a-hole (no offense, OP) on a message board about hoes just because he claims to be a "biochemist?" The ignorance around here is astonishing sometimes. If you are really interested in an issue -- and particularly one that may affect your own health -- do some research from multiple trusted sources.

As for the content of the original post, I don't see how any scientist could possibly support a gag order. Science only progresses when information flows freely. People with political agendas should not stand in the way of scientific communication. That makes no sense at all.

It makes perfect sense once you understand that Trump and his cronies are anti-science, anti-progress, anti-truth and anti-democracy.

These people and this administration harkens back to the Church outlawing science and punishing with death those who aided progress and knowledge before the Reformation. The Church had physicians like Servetus "roasted over a slow fire" for having dared to publish the true circulation of the blood in the early 1600s.

In the same time period, the Church attacked Galileo, who published the first true movement of the planets around the sun. For this daring contribution to knowledge and science he was tried by the Inquisition, found "vehemently suspect of heresy," and forced to recant. He spent the rest of his life under house arrest.

The resurrection of the philosophy of suppression of science, knowledge and progress is alive and well in the current administration.

Mstraka -- Yeah, this will be my only source for health info. /s I was interested in his opinion (he seems to have them). It's just like talking to someone you're sitting next to at a bar. You don't base your life on it, but if the bloke says he's a biochemist and says something interesting, like "I live an anti-inflamation lifestyle," sometimes the next question is "what does that mean?" Although in text/email, that can come off as a challenge (aka "What the hell does that mean, you idiot?), hence the move to qualify it by the fact that I'm asking because there's so much misinformation out there, and I'm interested in what a self identified biochemist believes is an anti-inflamation lifestyle. He may say something interesting that I can then go look up via reputable sources, or he might say something crazy, fun and weird. Either way, I don't think there's a harm in asking the question. I don't think anybody is going to base their actions on what one guy on a site filled with BSers is going to say. But it sure is all entertaining.

"Yes, climate change, it's been happening since the earth formed 4.5-billion years ago."

So what? Therefore, nothing we do matters? The universe may eventually break apart due to accelerating expansion. The Sun will eventually die. An asteroid may hit the Earth. Let's all just give up! Fuck it!

My point was, the scientific community is guilty of bias and incentives. Cancer is pretty much apolitical compare to other field. You have a big problem when 88% of breaking studies are irreproducible. The scientific community have not been respectful of the scientific process. They need to get their act together.

Now when you add political shit in with bias and incentives, you are fuck.

The debate about the usefulness of vitamin C in treating the common cold is a good example.

Wilson, Loh, and Foster (1972) state that the prophylactic effect refers to the ability of vitamin C to prevent a cold Furthermore, commencement of administration of vitamin C when cold symptoms first appear constitutes the therapeutic use. Rhinoviruses, which cause common colds, appear to cause damage by attracting the body’s defense cells to the site of injury. Vitamin C may be able to reduce the severity of symptoms during a common cold by reducing the number of oxidizing agents produced by the body’s defense cells.

In 1973 another study mostly refutes this study. I won't bother with the reference, it is easy to find using google.

The entire scientific process involves proposing hypotheses, testing to prove or disprove hypotheses, until the question has been resolved. And issues are rarely resolved quickly. Testing methodologies are improved, other testing methodologies are invalidated...in other words, the truth changes as the science progresses.

Today might be human caused global warming, tomorrow we might discover that global warming has much more to do with the giant candle that provides the energy to support life on our planet that resides 93 million miles away, and then finally we may discover that massive amounts of cow flatulence created by McDonald's suppliers is the culprit...

We get smarter. Old ideas are replaced with new ideas that are challenged by competing theories. Shit changes.

This blog needs more T and A.

go ahead and call me name.

I don't know the solution. But scientist funded with government money do have an agenda and conflict of interest. I don't see a problem with a temporary gag order on government scientist.

There are so few great mind left. They are all old or about to die. Take a guy like Bruce Ames for example. When he got data that the environmentalist like, they love him. When the leftist environmentalist don't like his data, he is a devil. But Dr. Ames don't give a fuck.

These day, your average PI in the same situation will milk the environmentalist and try to get as much money from the government as possible.
