This was a pleasant surprise for me too. Don't hold your breath for Chaffetz. He won't turn on Trump unless a critical mass of other Republicans do so first. He has no spine at all (see, e.g., Paul Ryan). Why one rep is allowed to have so much power is beyond me.

ShanaLay hit the point perfectly. Ratings are how you win a national election in the KGB of America in 2017. Trump was a boon for media profits so they put all their effort into mindlessly broadcasting his speeches and then hours more talking about his talking points. Billions in free PR. BTW. I think this happened with Obama as well; media hype bought him free coverage that Clinton couldn't buy.
Problem is very obvious, these campaigns go on for too damn long. I would like to see a test of the first amendment with a law that bans campaign for federal offices from starting until 180 days before the election. There are some flaws in that plan (incumbents easily can get around) but we have to do something.

There's NO surprise here.
The plan was once the republican party determined they couldn't get one of their own into office they reluctantly went to work on supporting Trump and finding him a solid VP.
The plan was to win the election. Dump (Impeach) Trump, and get their man behind the chair.
They were able to keep Trump somewhat under control with the threat of impeachment but once he got into office but they are never going to let him finish out a full term.
