Back in the 70's and 80's, Vietnam and the changes taking place in the social order had the country in a dark and brooding mood. And NYC was the national archetype of of every evil known to man or woman. So nearly every movie set in NYC reflected a dark, brooding, ominous state of life.

Paul Schrader, who wrote the screenplay to the 1976 classic film Taxi Driver, directed 2 grim and gritty films afterwards. The first one is called Hardcore (1979) starring George C. Scott as a midwest father searching for his runaway teenage daughter in the dark underworld of the sex industry in Hollywood.
The second film is called American Gigalo (1980) starring Richard Gere plays a male prostitute who is framed for murder he didn't commited of one of his customers. Also check out the movie Cruising (1980) directed by William Friedkin and starring Al Pacino as an undercover New York cop trying to catch a serial killer who murdered several gay men after picking them up from then secret underground gay bars.
