About a month ago I discovered a stunning "black comedy", a gorgeously stark portrait of some characters in 70's NYC (My obsession).

The film is: "Born To Win" made in 1971, directed by Ivan Passer and starring George Segal, Karen Black, and Robert De Niro.
In the vein of "Panic In Needle Park", but with more humor, and a different vision. Segal's performance is outstanding as well.

What have you discovered, or an old favorite that is dark, cinema, stark and real, raw yet has heart and depth to it from before circa 1982?

Documentaries are wonderful as well!

Looking forward to finding some groovy new film. I know there are cinephiles on here, so let's share

A Clockwork Orange (1971)

You might already know this film since it was so widely popular. If you haven't seen it, then I would strongly recommend it. thought provoking and funny..

Back in the 70's and 80's, Vietnam and the changes taking place in the social order had the country in a dark and brooding mood. And NYC was the national archetype of of every evil known to man or woman. So nearly every movie set in NYC reflected a dark, brooding, ominous state of life.

Sunday Bloody Sunday. (British film. Highly acclaimed at the time. Script was too literate for popular consumption, near Shakespeare. Uses the trio from Cosi Fan Tutti as sound track and brought me my first awareness of real opera.)

Paul Schrader, who wrote the screenplay to the 1976 classic film Taxi Driver, directed 2 grim and gritty films afterwards. The first one is called Hardcore (1979) starring George C. Scott as a midwest father searching for his runaway teenage daughter in the dark underworld of the sex industry in Hollywood.
The second film is called American Gigalo (1980) starring Richard Gere plays a male prostitute who is framed for murder he didn't commited of one of his customers. Also check out the movie Cruising (1980) directed by William Friedkin and starring Al Pacino as an undercover New York cop trying to catch a serial killer who murdered several gay men after picking them up from then secret underground gay bars.

All that Jazz (1979)

Matador (1986) [yah I know, but man, Almodovar was a psycho sob back then]

Equus (1977) [Peter Schaffer at his best and before the excellent Amadeus made him big]

Willy Wonka (1971) [as psycho as It comes to "kids" movies]

Quadrophenia (1978) [WE ARE THE MODS!]

Lenny (1977) [Because....Fosse]

Caligula (1979) [Because....Nekkid]

In the Realm of the Senses (1976) [I watched it once, and it fucked me up for a long time. I HIGHLY recommend ]

And I'm not EVEN going to get into 80's Cronenberg's stuff. Videodrome missed by one year (1983)

Thanks for making me reminisce about some of the weirdest movies I remember!
