How do you remember all the notes for the hundreds(/thousands?) of songs in a repertoire???

Just askin for a friend...OK, it's really me.

Some musicians read music and just follow what's in front of them. For those commit a song to memory, it's not a matter of remembering thousands of notes. There are patterns and they are not thinking about India visual notes.

Songs have patterns that are routine to follow, once you have rehearsed them enough. I think it is easier to remember song patterns than lyrics. Unless it's the Ramones, where they are both easy to remember.

Each song is usually the same three chords played over and over. For example, Sweet Home Alabama is DCG. As long as you know those three chords and can jump to them relatively quick, you can play the song. After you play it a few times, muscle memory kicks in and you can play it without thinking about it.

It ain't rocket science as most guitar players are pretty dumb. Drummers are even worse. But bass players? Forget about it.

I'm not thinking of rock musicians. Seems like any high school dropout can become a rock "musician." More interested in classical, jazz, and piano bar type musicians who can play lots of songs at the drop of a hat.

And remembering the lyrics is another trick.

The concept is actually quite easy. Just like left foot, than right foot.

The hard part is actually playing the notes clearly. Any talentless weasel can play notes in order, but the art is to make it sound worth listening to.

Classical, jazz, etc, all read off of charts. Those white and black lined pages they are always turning, except now they all use tablets.

Music is like a language. Speak a language long enough and the language is imprinted in your brain and becomes part of you. Play a song enough times, and it becomes a part of you as well.

Most instrumental musicians I know do not remember lyrics to songs very well. I think that is because a classically trained musician is distracted by the interaction of the melody, the harmonies, and the chord changes.

Singers that can knock out tune after tune from the great American songbook really impress me.
