People book multiple reservations and some people don't show up.
So to help assure the flights are full, the airlines overbook, figuring some people won't be there.
When everyone shows up...they are screwed. They offer free stuff to encourage a few people to take the next flight. If that doesn't work, they have to remove people from the plane.
Vicious circle......show up for your flight.....don't double book.....and the airlines won't have to overbook their flights.

A doctor is always nice to have on board in case of a medical situation. They should have thrown someone else off rather beating on someone that saves lives. But I could be wrong

If you were cheap enough to buy a coach fare and you are the unlucky one who is told sorry, you are shit outta luck, you take whatever measley deal they give you, get your ass to the bar and throw back a few and wait for the next flight. No big deal. Maybe learn from the experience and fly business class next time.
