Had Farmers when the 1994 Northridge earthquake struck. I had their top of the line "Protector Plus" policy. Supposedly, everything was covered.
But not so fast, bub.
The "everything" was from the drywall IN.
From the drywall OUT, they applied depreciation. So even tho I had enlarged and modernized the house from a plain-jane 2100 square foot 3 bedroom 1 and 3/4 bath to a 3,040 square foot 5 bedroom 3 bath and had put in concrete walls, electric gates and stuff, they said the original house was built in 1955 and that's what they go off of.
So with $179,000 in damage, all the glass windows blown out, both chimneys down, washing machine-sized pieces of plaster cracked off exposing the wire and paper underneath, all of the concrete exterior walls down, etc., they said they were only gonna cover 119,000 in damage because it was "built in 1955."
Despite proofs that I had built in the 1990s, they were uninterested in more.
I found good attorneys, sued them for the remaining 50 grand in damages, and they settled (out of court) for $40K. Good enough, and I didn't have to wait for a court date.
But I'm now with Progressive: cars, bikes, house. Fuck 'em.

yep...unfortunately they will fight tooth and nail not to pay...hopefully most just want to verify appropriately before paying out...some seem like they are pushing the envelope/law to never pay.
have good documentation

yes, i was rear ended by a huge construction truck on freeway and my insurance (esurance) decided to raise my insurance to over 600 a month (the same as car note at time). Canceled it immediately and never bought foreign again

so you were hit and damaged? were they uninsured? probably gotta stick with the basic ones
thqt one company might need a little class action for stuff like that
I recommend using Ameriprise through Costco for auto insurance. Very honest and they've always taken care of me.
All of the insurance companies are in it to "make money". So, don't expect to be handled with kid gloves. They will screw anyone. Progressive is the KING of screwing people. I hate the bitch Flow.
Insurance companies are like the pyramid scheme, except they are legit to do so.
You are fine with them as long as you make their monthly payment, but as soon as you place a claim, it's like they don't know you and hesitate to believe anything you have to say to them.
I don't trust them, never have and never will.
A better question is "Have you ever not been screwed over by an insurance company?"
They view it as their job to take your money drop by drop, live lavishly and then deny you coverage. In fact, insurance companies make ordinary thieves look down right ethical.

I had a car that was stolen. Thieves drove it on Santa Monica beach and trashed the transmission, breaks and more. $5,000 in damage. Insurance covered 45% of the repairs for "normal wear and tear".
Then, I got called by the local prosecutor. Two younger people admitted to 45 GTA's including mine. I had to sit at court for 4 hours to testify that I did not give them permission to take the care. All 30 seconds on the stand.

wait till you get to disability insurance...atty's love this shit.
Last week a buddy I haven't seen in about a year called me with the bad news . He has stage four cancer with less than a year to live and they are still denying him disability insurance payments.
yep...i have seen many of them just like that...brutal shit.
so you can imagine in that frame of mind and health trying to cross all T's and dot the I's to prove the disability...getting an atty is the only way. the problem with an atty is they get 40% of the monthly payout....some won't even take the case on a prepaid hourly basis of 6-700 per hour...they want the percentage monthly for life of contract. it's fucked up
Talk about Ass backwards smh
you can appeal twice to insurance company....then it goes to court. only the info in the appeals is used in the court appeal. so need an atty or its all lost. 10k monthly contract for 15 plus years?
btw...recommend getting disab insurance.....shit happens. if you don't have it...you might just wish you died.

Geico is good. I've also had good luck with Metromile. They're National General's pay-per-mile service, and they're still trying to make a name for themselves, so they were pretty good when I got hit.
"Last week a buddy I haven't seen in about a year called me with the bad news . He has stage four cancer with less than a year to live and they are still denying him disability insurance payments."
I had stage two, nearly three Lymphoma, but was originally diagnosed with Castleman's Disease, which is essentially a death sentence. After two biopsies and two opinions from the NIH, they diagnosed me with Hodgkins, but it was of mixed cellularity. So really they didn't even know what I had. I was bedridden for a year, and had been sick before that.
I went all the way to a judge, and they still denied me, even though I obviously couldn't work enough, and every state agency seemed to have no problem with considering me disabled. In fact, I still deal with chronic pain and my new disabled placard came in the mail yesterday.
I'm in remission, but I still have other health problems. I'm going to apply for SSI instead of SSDI this time. But I know that they suck epic ass.
I'm sorry about your buddy. It sounds like they're taking advantage of him BECAUSE the diagnosis is so severe. That's fucked up.
And yes, I know SSI and SSDI are not private insurance, but public sector or private sector, nobody wants to pay.

Remember Farmers is an ahency and not insurance carrier. Agents are in it for rhe money its best to avoid them all together and go direct to the carriers. It does cause a little extra work on your end but it also pushes you to actually read, and hopefully ask questions to understand the policy coverage you are purchasing.
I used to work for a company where one of my responsibilities was to pay out farmers agents commission. From my experience half of them (if not more) dont even understand the paper work and are basically Sales reps.

Insurance is a fucking scam. My daughter was in a small fender bender and I wanted to handle it without insurance. Not possible unless the other party agrees. WTF. Why can't I just pay for it and not report to my insurance. Bullshit. So a $2500 accident is going to cost me 5K or more over the next few years.
Insurance companies are out to make money. Not give it away..
I've learned my lesson, you can't deal with insurance companies head on. Always consult an Attorney
It's me complaining again. I got my renewal yesterday from Mercury Ins. No tickets or accidents. My rates just went up $426 more per year for two cars. Anyone else get a large rate increase?
Farmers two cars one with rideshare rider, and a truck. 237.00 But that double payment BS. But they got ya again cause that also lowers the next five months. Ugh...
They asked if I'd do a senior refresher course online. It would lower the payments. Test is valid for three years yet cost 16.50 and takes a long time to finish.

I heard on the radio that business property insurance has gone up 150% in CA,
forcing many businesses to move or close. Eventually landlords
will go bankrupt due to the loss of tenants if something is not done to change
this situation.
Yes. It is definitely being applied to home and auto in California. I understand some have stopped underwriting here.
Nationwide Insurance auto spiked over $80/mo for the same cars, obviously one year older and less valuable, no tickets or accidents.
Switched auto and home to AAA for much better rates in January. I received a letter last week that the homeowners team at AAA underestimated my home value and unilaterally increased the structure value $300K.

Adding this bit to see if anyone else has had this happen. Had a house near The Berry Farm. I contracted with a roofer to replace the roof. the roof did not leak, just old and two layers of asphalt shingles. I was prepping the rest for paint on evenings after work and weekends. So it was sanded, added putty where necessary, and being caulked, etc. This was only for roughly 2 weeks of work, not in this condition for months on end.
I received a letter and call from my agent stating that the company randomly sent someone to take photos of my house. They insisted that my house was in disrepair, and they were going to cancel me if I did not clean it up. How fooking aggravating is in the middle of giving it a make over some a-hole and demands you do what you are in the middle of doing?
The house never looked dilapidated, it was simply time to give it a facelift.
The insurance market was in the same mode as currently and they were looking for houses to drop to lower their exposure. Fooking pirates

Next thing you all will bitch about is CA taxes, fuel, and electricity prices.
Bless the CROC.
