Robert Siodmak's 1946 noir classic "The Killers" (Burt Lancaster, Ava Gardner) has a 13 minute opening that's based on the short story written by Hemingway with the same title. It's one of the best opening scenes in film noir history.
I prefer The Killers opening sequence to that of White Heat that is described two posts above.
The Killers is a better film than White Heat but IMDB users prefer White Heat 8.2 to The Killers 7.9...

Saving Private Ryan. Actually the opening scene is not the attack at Omaha Beach. The opening scene is of an old man walking through the American cemetery there. It is where my father is buried and I will never forget it.
