I ran the SLO Marathon in 2014. It's a great race. The race starts in downtown SLO and the finish line is at The Madonna Inn.
SLO is one of my favorite cities. It has fantastic trail running options for a runner. There is a route that's called the SLO Loop...it's adjacent to the university. It's so cool to run during spring..there are wild flowers of every color that are as like 6' feet tall.
Because Cal Poly SLO has a huge agriculture program, there are a variety of farm animals grazing in sections of the hills. A runner will see lambs, goats, pigs, cows and horses. And when I say see them, not from a distance...but from like 3' feet away. In fact there are these gates that limit the animals access and the rules of the trail dictate that when a runner passes through the gates, they must re-chain the fence.
The coolest part is at a certain portion you run parallel to train tracks and you could see a train just blow by in it's glory...
"I wish I was a headlight on a north bound train. I'd shine my light through the cool Colorado rain."
There are creeks, bridge crossings and plenty of rolling hills. You can get some great speed on some downhills...I've long maintained there are few activities for humans as fun as running fast downhill. If you cannot tell I've run the SLO Loop dozens of times.
