Oh and then learn jiu jitsu or judo instead
If you're trying for self defense, boxing isn't going to help you much because most actual fites end up on the ground quickly
|
|
Oh no... the old "fights end up on the ground myth" the jiu-jitsu folks love to try. No... learn striking... Tae Kwon Do is good. Jiu-jitsu and judo are fun and great training for mind and body but not serious self-defense.They will help you carry yourself with confidence, which makes you less likely to be picked to be a victim.
Most fights are some drunken or angry asshole messing with you. Strike to make him/her rethink coming at you, then run.... best strategy.
With grappling you have to grab the asshole and hold on to them, so you are stuck and can't get away... last thing you want. Even worse if they have a weapon or a friend or are insensitive to pain from drugs. And if you break a bone or choke them out, you could be charged.
Run away!

take dancing lessons (seriously), watch tons of footage of Ali, any fighter named Sugar Ray, and then Rocky or Frazier (to see how the ones with shitty footwork cut-off those with good footwork). And if this doesn't help, you can always chase a chicken around a coop and watch Rocky reruns.
the pivot is basically the same move as stamping out a cigarette (in the old days) and is necessary to shift your hips (and hence your power) into a right crosse or overhand right (opposite if you're a lefty) and maintain balance.
PS jumping rope is over-rated in developing footwork, but will build the stamina needed to stay on your toes and develop breathe control.
good luck

Best boxing footwork is "the curly shuffle"!

Krav Maga.

Boxing is good to know. When I took boxing pivoting was a way to change angles to avoid a punch or to land one. Brazilian jiu jitsu is a great martial art but it takes time. Krav maga is choreographed like aikido. They are what i call feel good martial arts. They don't really spar in most classes so you leave the class thinking i can take care of myself. I know a couple of women in their 40's that swear by krav maga. They're both 50 lbs overweight and have been taking for over a year. Ive been taking jiu jitsu for 10 months and have lost 15 lbs and haven't refused a french fry or changed my diet. Neither of these women could last more than 20 seconds in a real altercation due to poor cardio. Due to jiu jitsu my cardio is so much better. After stretching for 10 minutes we forward and backward rolls and hip escapes for another 10 minutes. That alone most people it takes a month for newbie to even do without gassing out. I think 80% of people who start jiu jitsu quit within 6 months because it's very demanding and difficult. Plus humbling cause for the first year or two you're going to get your ass kicked when the sparring starts at the last 30-40 minutes of class.

Great responses thanks!!!
I’m working on leaning out and getting good stamina and form!!!

Good luck bellywoofer boxing is tons of fun. A lot more technical than I had guessed before I started training.

Like MartinBlank said, footwork can be improved by jumping rope. Also, doing partner drills and shadowboxing would help with footwork and nothing helps more than sparring.
Pivoting, in general, is transferring your weight to say your front leg and using the ball of the foot to pivot and move your body about that point. You pretty much pivot with every punch. Now in sparring, pivoting can be moving your body about a point to create angles. You might take a side step then pivot to avoid a straight right. Someone good at this is Vasyl Lomachenko.
I’m no expert but I once contemplated competing in both boxing/kickboxing before giving that up to focus on my education and career.

Were you just training for fitness purposes or to compete?
Boxing is actually very effective in striking. Otherwise, MMA fighters wouldn’t spend so much time trying to improve their hands.

Fitness and coordination.
I destroyed my hands using the punching bag bare last week 😂
|
|
Just don’t get hit.
|
|
Yeah, you don't want to punch the bag with your bare hands. You need some good hand wraps and some bag gloves. Also, when sparring, you want to use 16 oz. training gloves.
|
|
I do have the equipment, it just feels natural doing it bare hands.

Throwback

Lots and lots of jump roping. But it has to be proper skipping: YouTube how boxers jump rope and try to learn.
Pivoting is when you twist the ball of your lead foot and the drag the back foot in order to Chang angles
|
|
Couldn't resist.

Putting wrap and/or wearing gloves isn't just to protect your hands, its to protect the bag too - some people got some sharp knuckles.

Youtube : Sugar Ray Leonard
I'm sure that they have some old training clips of his...
The Sugar Man had the best footwork and lateral movement...

Will do thanks for the input guys.
I feel like simple cardio sessions like jogging, hitting the heavy bag and speed bag aren’t good enough.
Heavy bag only helps with power shots and speed bag helps with perception and motor skills.
Happy Monday folks!

Do the agility ladder (flat ladder)
Also may string up a clothesline and then work back and forth weaving back and forth under the line to coordinate movement will shuffling up and back.
|
|
Drink a lot of beer in the room furthest from your bathroom. If you hold it as long as possible, I guarantee you will soon be working on your speed, footwork, and hand to zipper coordination. Bobbing and weaving is overrated.

^^^I hear you don't need practice with that...(rim shot)
