A diesel was considered an 'alternative fuel' vehicle a couple of decades ago, and people used to get income tax credits to encourage their purchase, since diesel required less amount of crude to refine.....thus being energy conscious.
But as is often the case, we changed course after the government encouraged the purchase of diesel vehicles and now we revile these diesel vehicles as polluters.

Yea we revile the diesel because it is a gross polluter in case you weren't clear. Even the birthplace of the diesel, Germany, has many cities gearing up to ban them.
