The Smothers Brothers (total badasses) had Belafonte sing 'Don't stop the Carnival' with the brutal and iconic images of the DNC and ensuing riots....so powerful

Abbie Hoffman (RIP) My personal hero-words on the price of Revolution from '68

And Hoffman and the Yippies thoughts before the protesters in the park were brutalized at the DNC-gives you chills when you see what malice actually transpired

I remember going to see CREAM at the Anaheim Convention Center in the Spring of 1968, and them saw them again in San Diego two days later. What a year!

By the following summer 1969, I had received THAT letter from Mr. Nixon asking how I looked in green. I enlisted in the Air Force to avoid the draft, and on August 15, 1969, I was doing push ups in San Antonio, Texas on the very same day that Hendrix was playing at WOODSTOCK!

It was a time of true division in the US. If you think the country is polarized now, you should read some history.
The fact that Nixon became president was a direct result of the times, and the competing ideological positions. Nixon was, in my opinion, the worst US president in history.
1. Segregation still existed.
2. Nixon lied and said he would end the war.
3. The war was on the TV every night. Very graphic for the time.
4. Militant groups made attempts to over throw the establishment.
5. The problems of the middle east began to affect the US.
6. Charlie Manson and his nut job followers put a stake in the heart of the hippy movement.
Actually, the hippy movement was a joke. It was mostly a bunch of self serving idiots who wanted to get as much for free, while contributing nothing.
It was a time of growth for the country.

Nobody listened (or cared) to heed Eisenhower when he warned us of the military industrial complex.

Nothing has changed except if you protest now your anti American and vilified. Brainwashing at its finest.

"Actually, the hippy movement was a joke. It was mostly a bunch of self serving idiots who wanted to get as much for free, while contributing nothing."
Sounds like the liberal left of today.

looking back, more like antifa, but more focused against the war and the gov't, not against speech of the opposition, and rioting just because
of course there was the weather underground, which was much more violent and did perpetrate many criminal activities
bill ayers (obammys buddy) bernadine doren, mark rudd, and a host of other maniacs

Wow Sasha, I love me a hippie girl...too sexy...

@rideme, you are wrong about what the Mainstream Left wants.
We are NOT looking to get something for nothing. That is a dismissive lie told by the more ridiculous elements of the Right.
We DO want decent jobs that keep up with the cost of living instead of falling a bit further behind every year, year after year.
We DO want affordable health care.
We DON'T want college students to have to be in debt for $80,000 just to go to a state university.
And we are tired of our booming economy giving virtually all the gains to the top 10%, while being told the fat cats can't afford to give the rest of us a raise. Meanwhile, the same fat cats get more tax cuts while we hear the Repubs talking about cutting Social Security. Ridiculous!
I want to work for a living, and I enjoy the challenge of working hard, but that doesn't mean I want to get fucked over every day at work for someone else's benefit.

As a fellow member of your '90%,' I am unmoved by your entitled demanding.
While your wants may (may) sound reasonable to some, your solutions don't fit your purported injustice. Your left's health care solution didn't saddle your evil '10%.'
$80 grand? No. Way more than when I went but no - make better choices. And the left's 'college for everybody' has a hand in that too.
In this 'free society' politicians always speak grandly of your "opportunities" and "rights" to . The unfortunate flip side to that coin is your unmentioned opportunity and right to fail at your attempts. Casinos only show winning, right?
I don't have your solution. Politicians will promise you anything for you to make them a '10%er.'
|
|
^ "rights" to (insert what you want to hear here).
|
|
No, but I don't feel that I was promised anything that I didn't get.
I also don't have anything to blame anybody else for.
What I do have is an increased disdain for politicians.

As bad as Nixon was, his screwing of the “common man” in favor of corporate interests was child’s play in comparison to Trump. The late 60s spawned a bifurcation of America that has only gotten worse. The American Dream may not be dead, but it is on life support and the US health care system is not in a position to save it.
|
|
I don't remember too much about 68 and 69. Probably because I was at Summer of Love 1967. Pretty much comatose for a couple years.
|

Harper47, You know what they say, "if you remember the 60s you weren't there"
|

I remember the King assasination. I was in the Army National Guard at the time and was sure we would be called up to deal with riots sure to ensue. But nothing much happened where I lived.
I do think all you socialists should take a good look at how Venezuela is doing. They should be the richest country in South America, but the entire country is sinking into nothingness.
I think it was Winston Churchill who said that socialism is great until you run out of other people’s money.
He also gets credit for saying that if you are not a liberal when you are young, you have no heart. If you are not a conservative when you are older, you have no brain.

Yea the 60's were a great time here in america. The Viet Nam war, John F Kennedy killed, Martin L King killed, Robert Kennedy killed.... just to mention some of the good times
