I've seen several times people mentioned "service to his country" .
Maybe it'll help you understand it better if we characterize this as "service to our country" .
Someone else mentioned that they didn't know if he was a Democrat or Republican.
Perhaps that's definition of a patriot, someone who put our country above partisanship or his own political career.

How many Military deferments did "Don the Con" get while John McCain served in Vietnam? In 1968 "Don the Con" was 22 . While others answered their country's call, The POTUS got a total of five deferments got a total of five and one of them was for Bone Spurs.

A deferrment opportunity was a very coveted thing. The more privileged you were, the more it tended to be available to you. Most took advantage, some didn't. Not surprising, of course, during an unpopular war.
