They don't overpay. The only time they overpay is unless it's personal.

You have to pay an employee what the market dictates. Most NFL players have a very short career,
if they get hurt they are done.

I'm very aware of lifespan of most NFL players. I want to say it is less than 4 years. I had a buddy who played for 2 years. He got cut before his 3-year mark. His agent told him something to the extent he was close to retirement and that's when my opinion about the NFL changed.
