Just found out that Mendocino Brewing Co. of Hopland has shut down, Red Tail Ale no more

My favorite beer is gone. Me and Red Tail Ale have traveled across the country many times. I would always buy a few cases to take with me and keep a dozen or so on ice. Where ever I was at, river, lake, barbecue, house party... I would offer some up to other people. Everyone said it was some of the best beer they ever drank. Now it is gone. In 1997 the company went public and a majority of the stock was purchased by Vijay Mallya, an Indian business man. Now Vijay Mallya is in hiding in Great Britain because of immense fraud, He owes something like 1.3 billion dollars. Anybody know of some good tasting red ales?

AGGGHH!! That was basically my ideal beer and I actually brewed a knock-off of it when I home brewed. Dayyum. Bought some a while ago at TJ's but haven't had it in a while.

My recommendation as a red with more malt than hops would be Smithwicks Irish Ale. Have had it before a few times and got to try it at the brewery (well, they don't brew it there but, what evah) in Ireland in May. Forgot how good it is. Can get it at BevMo.

I have not tasted that one, maybe another local brewery will pick that one up and continue to brew.

How about George Killans Irish Red?

I am drinking a red ale called Drive Thru Red right now. It is okay and has heavier ale taste then I am used too. I have tried the Killian's Irish Red before, It is better then this Drive Thru Red. I have not tried the Conway's Irish Ale yet, that will be next when the Russians play again. Red Seal is pretty good too and has a slight bite to it but it is hard to find. I am going to miss the smoothness of the Red Tail.
