Don't go! It is fucked up this year.
The new owners (Branson) of the hotel/convention center will rebrand the HardRock to Virgin and is trying to distance itself from association with porn. So they are fucking with the fans and the talent by randomly decreeing the following ban:
1. No fan DSLR cameras allowed
2. No Backpacks to store anything you want to purchase from the talent
3. No outside food - so if the talent wants to bring in their donuts even if it was bought at the donut place inside the hotel, tough luck - you need to buy it inside the convention hall, but of course, the bar inside the hall doesn't sell donuts!
It is a big FUCK YOU to everyone by the new owners since this is the last year of the contract.
They never made these conditions clear on their webpages or ticket purchase pages. These are totally new bans.

You would have better luck at local meet and greets to say hi to your favorite stars and relax than the AVN expo.

I have to agree with @amateurfan2004 no backpacks were allowed. You had to check them with the hotel. If you called the hotel they would tell you that you could NOT buy tickets at the venue which was a complete lie, maybe to lessen the number of people IDK.

If you go to AVN to meet the A list stars or ones who work for high-end production companies, then yes, you will be in "3 hour" lines and you won't have as much interaction with them as you would like.
If you go to AVN to meet mostly A- or B list stars and/or ones who work for smaller production companies or ones who are no-names and newbies to the industry, then the lines won't be as long. And if you are happy with some quality interaction with some stars at the strip clubs after the show, you could get some pretty good mileage.
My friends and I generally do the latter, so we are able to have some fun attending this sausage fest. In the evenings, we attend the Hustler Club for feature dances from a few stars; you get complimentary admission with your AVN VIP wrist band (and you don't have to purchase any drinks either) - and also get quality interaction like tits-in-your-face, or your-nose-in-her-crotch level interaction. Check out my photo album in the link below with random pictures that I took from past AVN Adult Entertainment Expos (I do not have a lot of this years pictures because of the ban on DSLR cameras). You might recognize some familiar faces from HX.
But because they (the hotel management mostly) threw this last minute breaking curveball at us, they screwed up our plans for fun. This made us lose the first day basically. And we will never regain what we lost since we could not recreate what happened on that magical first day when crowds were sparse on a Wednesday and the stars were more willing to please the fewer fans that came out to support them and show them love. Some stars gave us "intimate" shows, like you see in my pictures in the link below. But because of the blanket bans, I could not take my nicer higher performing more reliable camera (DSLR) and had to rely on an ancient point-n-shoot which missed a lot of good shots. My memory is not as good in my old age, so I know that I will forget much of what happened then. After the first day, the hotel management started cracking down on these "intimate" shows; when they caught talent showing too much, they started fining their production companies with the threat of kicking them out of the show and one star said that her company was fined $60,000 because she didn't wear panties one day.
The process of entering the Expo also took longer than in the past. Now you pass thru a metal detector, empty your pockets and have your small bag (that they provide as alternates to your backpack) checked. Part of this (ban on backpacks) is due to the Mandalay Bay incident of course, so this is understandable. Because of this, the lines are slow as molasses for both fans and industry/talent (who have separate entrances) with many disgruntled fans and talent voicing their displeasure. Some fans were openly try to bring in their DSLRs and the security guards would tell them they had to come back without them; if the fans argue back, this caused the lines to slow down even more so. Depending on the security guard and the hotel management working the line at the time, some were able to get these cameras in, while others would not be as lucky - it was random draw on whether you got a lenient guard/manager combination or a more hard-ass one.
Why is this a big deal? A number of hardcore fans have graduated from taking cell-phone or point-n-shoot selfies with stars to taking higher resolution/quality pictures that DSLRs are capable of taking, since a number of stars will charge fees for these pictures. This blanket ban has the chilling effect of reducing a star's income from these fees due to a fan's reluctance to pay for crappy cell-phone/P-n-S pictures, when he was expecting to take nicer ones with his now banned DSLR. Also, DLSR cameras can take faster higher resolution pictures during these quick "intimate" show.
Well, enough of the bitching and moaning; this is how to temper your expectations and some details of what happened and some reasons why it happened (Mandalay Bay shooting, and rebranding/disassociation with the porn industry, and general Fuck You to the fans/talent since the new owners don't want to host this Expo any more).
