"Under God" was not in the original Pledge.
It was added in 1954 near the height of the "red scare" when "godless communism" and the red scare was on the nation's mind, Joseph McCarthy had been scapegoating "reds," and the country was swept up in the fears of "godless communism" gaining in world power.
While we're citing the Founding Fathers, let's remember that many of them had been raised under the tyranny of state-sponsored religion, and when they wrote the Constitution they were quite firm in their resolve to keep religion and any one person's concept of God from tyrannically oppressing others, as had been the practice and the history of virtually every other nation on earth

The phrase "under God" was incorporated into the Pledge of Allegiance on June 14, 1954, by a Joint Resolution of Congress amending § 4 of the Flag Code enacted in 1942.[30]

Allow me to quote the First Amendment of the Constitution.

One could argue if the bible was taught in all public schools across all 50 states that act would be favoring one religion over another.
