I use to like going to Bevmo with my ol pal JD. I tried forming a search party for him, but to no avail.
I wrote a song about it, I called it " He's gone" that was my only way to cope with my loss.

agree with Devilish
Paso Robles/Templeton have a lot to choose from. Plus fun tasting rooms in downtown Paso - cool shops ans food. Much more low-key than Napa. Nice people.
Los Olivos/Orcutt/Solvang area is great and a bit closer - some eclectic stuff plenty of good options.

agree with the Paso Robles wine. Better then Napa and Temecula. Less expensive and beautiful countryside.
about a 4 hour drive from L A

prager winery, st helena ca
they have the most amazing port wines including a white port that is to die for
if you like great wine.....

3 hours for me to Paso. I was just there recently. Just shoot up the 5 freeway to the 46 west.
I've been to Napa/Sonoma and they are just too commercialized and expensive.
Paso has over 300 wineries now. Of course not all of are great, only a handful are.
Daou is one of the most beautiful wineries around. Their tastings are a bit pricey ($40) compared to many of the other wineries but you do get quality wine there. I'm a wine club member so it's FREE!
You can go to Tobin James for free...you do get what you pay for.
Check out the link below to help navigate the central coast wineries.

Robles.
Avoid Temecula. Over rated and almost all of the staff are incompetent. They need to go to real wineries to see how things should be.
If you have the means to travel, of course go to French wine country like Bordeaux or Italy's Alto Adige region.

sherkan is right.
I highly recommend Portugal and Spain as well.
People are especially nice in Portugal and the wine is excellent.
A great value.

Turley - Templeton (near Paso Robles)

You would be amazed at what you can gets for say 7-10 Euros a bottle ($9-$12)
People also speak a good deal of English.
Very affordable.
They don't tip the way we do at restaurants. 10% is considered very generous almost lavish.
Also, Portugal is rated as the 3rd safest country in the world.
Behind Iceland and New Zealand.

One of the most amazing vineyard area is a region in Italy called Valpolicella region. I was just amazed and didn't want to leave that area. As it was mentioned here, French wines and their vineyards are also to die for.
I go to Paso Robles often, last time we went straight to DAUO got couple of bottles and just sat outside and enjoyed the wine and the view. On the way to DAUO we stopped by a small cheese shop called Di Raimondos Cheese Shop / Italian Market (I downtown Paso Robles) and bought what we needed to enjoy the wine even more.
i just can't wait for DAUO to start and finish building their own hotel.

If you want to spend all that key on airfare to go to Europe that’s great but California wines are just a good and a great deal. Closer! Paso Robles Santa Barbara area are ideal fora weekend wine tasting can’t go wrong ! Have a taste on me !

My wine drinking friends suggest something further south...

DbleDwn-I've been to Valle de Guadalupe
Beautiful region.
I went to many wineries and they all sucked.
Napa has no worries about Baja competition

Hahaha!!!
Thanks RW. It doesn’t surprise me that this particular group doesn’t know good wine, they go way overboard telling you they do. To me it all tastes ike sour grape juice. I just don’t have a palate for it.
Now put me in a rum tasting and I’m in heaven....
