Birds should know the term nautical mile, because it's used in aviation and boating, seeing how you birds need to know the speed to avoid being sucked in an approaching jet engine and causing a flame out. Most NOAA weather data buoys use knots as a unit of measure. Yes it's a vestige of olden sailing days when sailors used rope with knots and hour glasses with sand to measure speed. So for those that don't know a nautical mile is 1.15 of a standard land mile and it also based on the circumference of the earth.
So a wind gust of 35 knots is around 40 mph....
