What now? A fight over wine tariffs. FMLT!

Tags: Orange County, Current Events (All tags)

"Washington (AFP) - US President Donald Trump on Monday lashed out at France for unfair tariffs on "great" American wine.

In a Twitter outburst late last year, Trump likewise complained about wine trade.

European Union import duties on wine are higher than US tariffs on European wines, including those from France, but EU consumers buy less of the American product. France is a major wine producer but as part of the 28-member block does not set its own trade policy or tariffs.

Depending on the type and alcohol content, imported wine faces US duties of 5.3 cents to 12.7 cents a bottle, according to the US International Trade Commission. Sparkling wines are taxed a higher rate of about 14.9 cents a bottle.

But US wines shipped to the EU face duties of 11 to 29 cents a bottle, according to the Wine Institute, a trade body promoting American exports.

Still, between 2007 and 2018, French customs figures show, US exports to France tripled and Europe was by far the largest export destination for American wines.

In 2018, French exports of wine and spirits to the United States grew 4.6 percent to $3.6 billion (3.2 billion euros), according to industry data, making the United States the most valuable market for French exports."

So now Tramp wants to pick a fight over 5 - 20 cents per bottle on something that costs $10 - $100 or more! WTF!

See, this is the kind of backroom swampish lobbyist bullshit that Trump is perfect for dealing with it.

Why the hell should American wines be taxed to go into France at a higher rate than we tax French wines to come into America?

Backroom payoff bullshit. That's why. Put the American businesses at a disadvantage. And why?

Typically Republicans and Democrats are content to line their pockets and those of their cronies while fucking over We the People.

And in addition, Democrats typically think of Americans as cheaters, overprivileged, and in need of being punished and shown our place in the world.

And that's fucked up. Drain the damn swamp and replace with people who are on OUR side!!!

You think Tramp is only on our side???? What about his own pocket? (Like spending $105 million of your dollars on golf...much of that in his own clubs so it goes to him.) And the cabinet with how many corruption charges???

WAMB!
Im making a grip on my WAMB meetings.
I no longer live in a dumpster but have moved into a very nice shipping container.

I think it's important people whine about current events, if not life will go on unchecked. I also think it's a crime to commit crime. Report criminals. This country was built by criminals.

"California’s role in the world wine market is important certainly, accounting for about 280 million cases a year. But it’s not as important as Californians like to think. The French, Spanish, and Italians combine for almost 1.8 billion cases a year, while the total production of Chile plus Argentina is some 11 percent higher than California’s." https://www.winecurmudgeon.com/follow-up-the-foolishness-of-taxing-european-wine/

In other words, the US consumes nearly all of our wine production and for that reason there is almost none that enters the export market. These tariffs are the hobby horse or rich Napa wine families who want to keep their profits margins high by making sure there is not a cheaper alternative available to the US consumer. That's why you can buy a Napa cab for $40 a bottle or a better Italian superTuscan for 1/2 the price. Protectionism NEVER benefits the consumer.
