Apparently the hatches and doors were locked for whatever reason making it a sealed tomb. Bad way to go for sure.

Re OP. We should not speculate. Very unfair to the unfortunate ones who lost their lives and to the poor souls who will survive as tortured wretches. A boat at anchor is not risk free. 100 things can go wrong and 99 of them will result in the loss of life.

What did he speculate?

CNN would never speculate. They only report the news.

I have done overnight trips and it never occurred to me to see if there was an escape hatch near the bow. To exist the sleeping quarters the stairs go up over the engine bay. If the engine bay is on fire you could be trapped.

I am speculating from past experience from previous overnight trips. If I find out the stars is the only exit I will not be doing anymore overnight trips.

I'm sure this tragedy will change evacuation rules on boats with sleeping quarters.

It's just so unimaginable to die in a fire, surrounded by water, in pursuit of a sport of exploring underwater. I can totally understand how fast things can happen on a boat...which is why I'm sure someone should have been on night watch.

At the bow end of the bunk room was a curving staircase that led up to the galley area. Toward the stern, an escape hatch was situated above one of the bunks and led to the salon deck, which included the galley.

I don't think I speculated, only put out news. Very sad here in Santa Barbara. I never went on the Conception but dove off the sister ship the Truth. Everyone here at the SB harbor are very stunned.

@Nacraman. I overshot. Sorry. No, your post did not put up anything speculative or rumors. I should have been more clear that I was hoping the commenters would be cautious about not posting amateur forensic speculation. Terrible tragedy made even worse by fact we may never know what really happened.

I was on the Conception about 2 months ago last, and have dove off this boat and the other boats in their organization, Truth Aquatics, many times over the years. I am saddened as I knew many of the peeps in this operation. As to the escape hatch, the conception had one but it was pretty small, no more than 1 person, maybe 2 small peeps, at a time would fit. That is pretty typical on most diving or fishing boats with sleep quarters. Most bunk rooms on these type of boats are pretty tight. If it happened fast, as that is what it sounds like, the passengers probably had no chance.

My prayers go out to those lost and their families.

It was probably a propane tank fire and explosion from the galley

Crews Raise Wreckage of Dive Boat 10 Days After Fatal Fire Off Santa Cruz Island.

A crane on a barge lifted the charred remains of the vessel to the surface before it was placed on the barge. A salvage crew was set to take the boat ashore for inspection by investigators.

The boat will be taken to an "undisclosed secure location" for investigation, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said. The Los Angeles Times reported it will be taken to a a naval facility, where U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigators will examine its power, fuel and electrical systems.
