The power of suggestion, I own a mini drone and really haven't used it since I learned how to control it.
Now I'm thinking about a new drone with a 720 mp camera. I searched around the internet this morning and found one I like. I have a couple of questions so I emailed the company. Their reply will determine whether I buy that one or not.

So these drones aren't like the drones that the US military has. They are simple oversized model aircraft that once airborne, have one mission: fly to a specific GPS coordinate and crash into the target. All navigation and control parts are readily available from Chinese hobby sites. Build out of balsa wood, fiber glass, plastic or other radar transparent material and your enemy wouldn't see them coming. Whip up 20, 50 or a hundred in a small warehouse.

I love flying it. Great adjustable camera. About a mile (line of sight) range. About a 1/2 mile with obstructions.

Iran has a population of 81 million. Vietnam had a population of 38 million in 1965, Syria had a population of 18 million, and Iraq had a population of 25 million in 2003. Add them up and you get exactly 81 million. Given our recent bold victories in Vietnam, Syria, and Iraq, we can easily take on a country with the same population even though they have a well trained army.
It will be a cakewalk.

It’s very possible. It all comes down to the size of the drones and what they were made of. Also, where were they launched from. Smaller drones would be harder to detect, but have a lower range. But... they could launch them from a vessel(s) and be relatively unnoticed. The more sophisticated the drones end up being, the more it points to Iran directly.
