My garage is beautiful

I had a GF that lost all her belongings in a fire several years before. That's when she started hoarding.

Yo Burns...Wow I get that, it's like when my mom died, she smoked & I started cuz I thought it would make me feel closer to her

Usually the loss of a loved one, then Havingness takes over.

It gets worse with age. There is a cure.

I am really trying to make my footprint smaller. I am a total neat freak and not a hoarder but I do need to let some things go in my garage. It’s hard when you lose your parents & you have their nice older furniture... it fells like somehow I’m letting them go...I was told to take pix & let it go.
Who wants to help?

“I am really trying to make my footprint smaller”
Well... you know what it means if a girl has big feet 🦶

One day I was working in the garage, and noticed garbage was piling up and I had little to no room left.....the beginning of the end....never again!

If it is a decision whether to throw something out, you are on your way to being a hoarder!
Yeah but being so lazy not to take out the trash ?? Then the plumbing fails so ya just start pooping in cups & throwing it in the corner ???? Along with ALL kinds of other crap !!
It's a hoarder marathon on T.V. , this lady lost everything just cause she, she uuughhh I'm at a loss for words because I just don't understand & I shouldn't be all "judgey" it's definitely baffling though !! & Very sad !

It is truly a sad mental disease. I had an aunt that was like this. No trash in the house, just a lot of “stuff”, lot of it nice. Literally, floor to ceiling In about every room with a pathway to her bedroom/bathroom and kitchen. Her garage was an absolute fire hazard. She was heavily in debt as a result, being a compulsive shopper. Interventions went no where. When she passed, it took us a week to clean out and had the mother of all garage sales.

SkurferGurl, isn't there a Twilight Zone marathon you could watch instead?

Hoarding is a good thing. I like to hoard toilet paper and water.
I can trade it for many wonderful things
It's because of Hoarders that I now hoard toilet paper.

20,000 rolls of Charmin
I'm thinking when the shit hits the fan I should be getting about $2 a roll.
One could always put in a corn crop.
I only have 8 cases or tp now, but 20 cases of water, and no tee I'm not letting you swim in my water

I feel like I'm in some sorta "Twilight Zone" when I'm watching that craziness !!!
It's all such a waste of space !
When the plumbing fails and they start pooping in cups, that person definitely needs an intervention.

use a 5-gal bucket.
use a lid.
you can SIT your ASS down.
won't soil your floor.
dump under the bushes.
liquid can hydrate ground.

HEY!!! It's NOT hoarding! ... It's COLLECTING!
And yes ... it's a disease.

It's also about Loss, usually a loved one.
There is also stepping into a loved ones Vailence after they are gone. Meaning taking on / continuing there life as if they are still a live..
I agree completely with AFMadness.
I've got some experience with that.
I used to have lots of cool crap and collectibles. Then I moved around the country a bunch and had to let things go.
Now I live in a small house and just dont have room for useless crap anymore. I can appreciate someone else's collection.

I think the hoarding can be the result of just never throwing anything away or can be the result of compulsive buying disorders.
A friend of mine ended up with the responsibility of handling the estate of a woman that had more shoes than Imelda Marcos. Many of the shoes had never been taken out of the box. She just kept buying them online long beyond the point of ever being able to wear them.
When an uncle of mine died they found hundreds of rolls of paper towels (enough to last a family of 4 for 5 years). Apparently he just kept buying them every time they were on sale.

I’ve experienced being close to a few hoarders of various types, and the common denominator I have found is a fear of lack of control. Control being taken away from them.
If I find a pair of shoes that I like I will buy another pair and store them in the closet. I have six pair of shoes in the box waiting for their twins to wear out.
I'm sort of a horder being that I hate throwing anything away of value. It don't bother me to give it to Goodwill or The Salvation Army but they are closed now. The other day I took a perfectly good TV to E-waste because Goodwill is closed, that sort of bothered me.
Can’t say it was hoarding... but my garage was full of “good”stuff.
Then I adopted the 2 year rule. If I haven’t seen it in 2 years... and haven’t missed it. It’s got to go. The only real exceptions are tools and some books.

Can you just imagine how these people's ancestors would feel about all their hard work being done on a house just for them to come in and ruin it !
Shame on them !! So many homeless would give anything for a roof over their heads & some just destroy what they have in their homes by hoarding !!
People have a hard time of letting go.
3 piles: keep, donate, toss.
It took me 40yrs to stop accumulating and start letting go,
I save all of my fingernail and toenail clippings. I will find a use for them one day.
@Mozis I think there's a different name for that kinda hoarding !!!
I wonder what does the place look like six months later.
Former tenant was a hoarder. Always a keepsake that she would “deal with later” and it never happened, and the place was a mess.
Pain in the ass to get her to clean up, even with legal action. Had to kick her out.
I look at it like, You can not take it with you when you're dead.
Just bought a hoarder house. Stuff was everywhere and the only way to get around in the house is there are pathways from the front door to all the other rooms.
I figure it's going to take 2-3 40 yard dumpsters to cart all of the junk away - after going through the stuff first of course. Never know what you're going to find - the last one I got I found a coin collection with gold, platinum and silver coins as well as about 50 silver certificates.

Was flipping through Hulu - saw one promoted as the worst/ dirtiest.
How bad can it be - watched it - wow, just wow - at the end of the show, got the gal out - had to level the house as it wasn't cost effective to salvage.
Woman lived in her mom's house where plumbing had not worked in years.
She would use the bathroom in a bucket and either dump in the yard, or store in bottles in the house.
Unreal - just unbelievable But we have some sick people out there for sure..
That's easy to believe.
In this one, the one I just bought, the ceiling collapsed in the 2 guest rooms and in a corner of the master - the roof is way old and shingles are missing all over the house. The ceiling in the garage is also collapsed. Don't even ask me about the back yard! The owner was living in the master don't know what she did when it rained.
It belonged to the seller's sister who he hadn't seen a 15-20 years. She wouldn't let anyone come over.
The house itself is a complete gut - down to the studs inside and out and down to the trusses.
Hard to understand how people get to that point but it must have been an extremely traumatic event.

^^^^ WOW !! This is why I say " I don't get it !"
Atticus hopefully you'll find something of value, other than the land ?
Got the house for a great price - $175k. In the area the houses are selling for $450-$500+k.
Course my remod budget is $150 - $200k but I'll still make a good profit or I may keep it as a rental and let it appreciate, haven't decided yet.
Course now I may have to go back to Austin to make sure everything being done is to my standards and not done the way texans usually do things. Was looking forward to being in California for at least a couple of months.
