I doubt if Trump will even put on a defense. Just let the Senate Republicans acquit him by saying nothing here rises to the level of an impeachable offense., witch hunt, etc. The only possible roadblock to this would be Chief Justice John Roberts. Although I am sure his loyalties lie with the Republicans he might take his duty to preside over the proceedings seriously and at least somewhat impartially. This might mean the Republicans and perhaps the Democrats might be forced to argue the case on its merits; that is the strength and significance of the evidence that led to the Impeachment. In other words they might not get to argue its a sham, a witch-hunt, or that Pontus Pilot gave Jesus more rights etc. This might actually be interesting unlesss the Republicans can short circuit all of this.

I didn’t see this coming... I mean they’ve only been talking about impeaching him since before his inauguration.
The Senate will not convict, because they’ve already said they wouldn’t. Everyone keeps confusing this process with a real trial. It isn’t. It’s a political process. Just like the House had the constitutional power to set the rules and do what they wanted, the Senate does too. The Chief Justice is more of a figure head that is in place to enforce the rules that the Senate is going to set in play. There is speculation that there won’t even be any testimony. Basically the “prosecutor” will present the House’s case and then they will call for a vote. The vote will go along party lines, mostly. There may be a Democrat or two that vote against because they are worried about losing their seat.
If the Democrats maintain control of the house they have already signaled that they will make another run at it. Unless they make major gains in the Senate they won’t succeed then either. In the end we’ll know how the people feel about it next November. Till then each side will listen to their echo chambers and we won’t accomplish a fucking thing.

Hey BD 💎 long time no see! Well here’s my take on this whole impeachment thing, we pretty much know that the Senate won’t convict him, 67 senators it is an extremely high bar to overcome. It’s possible that if a few Republican senators like Mitt Romney from Utah, Lisa Murkowski from a Alaska, Martha McSally from Arizona, Cory Gardner from Colorado, and Susan Collins from Maine! Four of these senators are up for reelection in 2020 , 3 of them are purple states and Mr. Gardner in Colorado which is probably more blue than it’s ever been. I wonder if they want their legacy to read how it will read if they don’t stand up to Donald Trump and his antics. Anyway to hear Nancy Pelosi talk this evening she may not even handover the articles of impeachment to the Senate this coming January. We will have to see what happens. In the meantime it seems like every day a few more things get uncovered. Did any of you folks see his rally during parts of the Fox News broadcast! His face was red! Flush read. Not like the orange Cheeto were used to. I think it’s kind of a shame actually that the Republicans are doing all this stuff for the few nanoseconds if this will be a blip on the history of our country‘s radar. What will they say to their grandchildren.

Even the Fox News poll of a few days ago had 50% in favor of impeachment and removal. I think the Washington post had a pull out today that said 70% of people polled one and him impeached and removed. Like I said I don’t make any predictions. We don’t even know who the Democrats going to be. Anyway the next 10 1/2 months are going to be interesting!

Tulsi Gabbard voted "present" and not "yes" on impeaching Donald Trump. Tulsi Gabbard is a hero by recognizing that "removal of a sitting president must not be the culmination of a partisan process." That's right. The only way it should be done is through a bipartisanship effort. That's what got Nixon to resign -- a bipartisan effort that was underway in Congress to impeach and remove him from office. Otherwise, it will be seen as partisan and political, and it won't work. Tulsi Gabbard is one of the few Democrats who is a profile in courage today.

The threat to withhold sending impeachment articles to the Senate actually shows how weak the Democrats hand is in this. They are worried that the Senate trial will be a disaster for them (which it will be), so they think they may be able to milk this thing out and keep Trump "impeached" for the next 11 months or so, reminding everyone he's impeached and hoping this helps sink his chances in 2020. Problem is "impeached" Trump will just be like regular ol' Trump, and everything else will go on like before. In essence, what it means to be "impeached" will actually turn out to mean nothing of significance, because everything will have gone on just the same.

They IMPEACHED TRUMP for holding back the aid to get dirt on his political rival and obstruction of Congress. Again the Senate said they will be coordinating the trial WITH Trump. The Senate is supposed to be a separate branch of government. They shouldn't be coordinating anything with an impeached President for the trial that could have him thrown out of office for his conduct.

The proper and right thing would have been to build a bipartisan coalition to deal with Trump. If that mean only censuring him, so be it. Instead, they have done the partisan, political thing with little evidence impeachment will curtail Trump's behavior.
