Well maybe because, Iran shot down a US drone, Iran bomb an Saudy pipeline, then Iran sent a couple of torpedoes into a oil tanker in the Gulf, Iran proxies invaded our US Embassy in Iraq.
Yes, it was time for a significant response from the USA. Was it enough? I doubt it.

Trump had a bad guy killed who was responsible for planning the deaths of 100s of Americans over the last 25 years. A guy who was stepping up his game putting Americans and American interests at risk.

I don't think the motive behind this action was done because it helped Trump politically. I think this was done in response to the killing of an American contractor and the Iraqi embassy siege. Period. The Bushes would have done this. Reagan would have done this. Even Clinton may have done this. I don't think this is going to help Trump much either. The nation is already pretty mobilized one way or another on the issue of Trump's popularity due to impeachment.
