Wow Granite- your profile says 55 which puts you on the cusp of boomer, but I’m gonna place you in that generation. So you rattle off some accusations of entitlement at the younger generations, and in typical boomer fashion your assessment is based upon shit you make up yourself and not facts. So “gen Zs” are entitled because I called minimum wage “poverty wages”. I assume you really mean millennial because gen Zs are teens and super young adults right now. But let’s talk about this- fun fact- 1966 the year after you were born, enjoyed a MINIMUM WAGE that once adjusted for inflation and productivity would be worth exactly $19.33 in 2017 dollars. That’s the FEDERAL MINIMUM wage. Now mind you, the federal minimum wage is $ 7.50 currently so this means 19.33 for every McDonalds and Walmart worker in low cost areas like Alabama and shit. In California and other high cost markets, minimum wage is almost $13 right now, so I’m assuming an adjusted minimum for this area would be several dollars more, if not actually double that.

So who is entitled? I think it’s the generation that grew up with decent wages, super cheap universities 🤷🏻‍♀️ If growing up in that time doesn’t qualify for the entitlement badge the fact that you wanna pull the ladder up behind you, while at the same time spewing complaints based off of fiction you make up yourself would definitely do the trick.

And just so we’re clear, some of best friends and favorite people in the world are boomers so I’m not being generationalist.

But hammering on about the entitlement of generations that have had it worse than you by just about every financial metric that exists is peak fucking tropey boomer behavior. You can try to argue about how you FEEL things are, but facts don’t care about your feelings and these are some irrefutable facts.

Granite is not making much of an argument here. Saying "you don't know what xyz means" is equivalent to saying "you win, I got nothing to back up my crazy ass ideas".

In debate circles, it is only done when you can't back up your argument. It's ad hominem (and never convinces anyone of anything).

Alexis makes a good point comparing US wages to past and a real living wage.
Granite--wtf? compare US wages to some third word country? Like that should be our goal that our people live like they do in Venezuela? Not even relevant.

Bernie may not be the ideal candidate, but the time has come for all of his ideas. And as Alexis says, they aren't hippie dreamer stuff, they make sense economically and socially.

The USA is failing and badly, and needs to make a change if it will survive much longer. Bernie has some great plans and ideas.

And gotta say--the fact Sanders owns a couple houses and made money shows he does have parts of embracing capitalism and the classic American dream. How stupide to people have to be to call him a Socialist then attack him for not meeting their definition of that word?

Read somewhere had Nixon not done what he did with regards to gold in 1971, minimum wage would have increased at the same rate as the value of gold. And would be at a level similar to what Progressives want it to be now. But oh well... elect a criminal, get poor results.

also couldn't make much sense of @Granite, but seems he is trying to compare Bernie's plans to a dictatorship in a third world country.

Ummm a social democracy would make more sense to compare.

As for comparing to a dictator, Donny Trump is leading us down that path

lets see the link to the story where the Republicans are meeting because they think Bernie is going to win.

Bernie will get shredded in a general election. The Dems will stela’s it from him again and give it to Bloomberg. Bernie has the money to stay in it. Biden can have the money to stay in if he wins SC and at least 1/2 of Super Tuesday. If he doesn’t... the money will dry up. 75% of Democrats don’t want Bernie. They don’t want or believe in his policies.

Orange man wins 38 states (maybe more) if he runs against Bernie.

The only thing that changes that is if the economy takes a dump.

Mark it down. You heard it here.

Bernie’s already lost Florida with his 60 minutes interview. Can’t say to a bunch of Cubans that Castro did good things. Sure he increased literacy rates. They shot people in the head if they didn’t read the right books though. Cuba sure did a good job instilling boat building skills in its people.

As goes Florida, so goes the nation.

BTW most Libertarians choose choice. They are against a single payer program. They don’t mind a public option... but want private options that would allow them to opt out of the tax structure that would fund a public option. Free market healthcare options are a must for any Libertarian.

It’s hilarious when we start comparing US healthcare systems with places like Denmark. Managing, Funding and Providing healthcare for less than 6,000,000 people is a little different than doing it for 370,000,000 people.

It can be done... but the structural and organizational build-up would take a decade or longer... and still fall short. it will be the largest and most expensive bureaucracy the world has ever seen.

Not to mention the culture change that would have have to happen. Our mentality about almost everything would have to change. Money, how it’s earned. Education. How you qualify. What it costs. How it’s paid for. Etc...
Being a doctor in a socialized medicine country is not a high paying job.
How many doctors will study for 6-8years ... incur $500,000 to $1,000,000 in student debt And then work for $80,000 a year? so then what will nurses make? Physician’s assistants? Etc...
There are so many moving parts to solving that problem... we haven’t even done a small fraction of the work that would need to be done to figure this out.... help people understand it and then buy in.

Always nice to know where it started, see link

As for the content, Federal minimum wage is bullshit. The fact you think it should be the same in all 50 states makes u look like a moron and I'm not wasting my breath explaining it.. Your fav "socialist" Scandinavian countries dont even have a minimum wage.

However, regardless of what you call it, the generation that came out of the Great Depression and WW2 voted for and expanded a lot of "free" programs like Social Security, Medicare, etc.essentially borrowing from the futures of the most recent generations who will pay for it. Their way of getting even is to demand their own "free" shit.

Remember that they've gone a mil in debt for their lesbian dance major, can't get a job, can't buy a house and just found out their participation ribbons dont work like EBT. So, they feel they've been lied to and cheated, fuck you boomer, die already so I can have back the money you stole.

At least, I hope they're just greedy and selfish, as were previous generations. After 100 years of failed socialist experiments around the world, I'd hate to think they're so stupid as to try again here or anywhere based on pure ideology.

That’s the beauty... and/or horror of entitlement programs. Once adopted... they will continue to grow until they collapse under their own weight. They are impossible to sustain indefinitely.

Removing personal responsibility for a person’s own welfare creates a viscous circle of dependence... which is the goal of a bureaucrat.

Borrowing from the future isn't entitlement. It us the basis of all insurance and supported by hard science and math.

It's sad this attitude that the US is not capable of takibg care of it's own.

" sounds good, but how can we afford to take care of everone?"
Wealth... Billionaires

"Sure other countries can do it but we can't "

Really is the problem a lack of taxes or the corporate and social welfare misallocated. How much social welfare thru government or private actually makes it to main street.

We are taxed enough especially here in CA that I feel there could be universal health care. It would also require changes in malpractice law suits.

Social Security and Medicare I would like a refund for my participation then, I do not feel I should be considered on social welfare when asking for the government run 401k retirement plan, since they feel the public is too inept to save on their own. The government was correct the public is foolish enough to trust them.

There is a basic idea in the US that is very wrong--
that is that giving money to rich people is a good idea, giving money to poor people is socialism and bad.

Rich people get trillions in handouts, essentially many subsist on welfare. The tax breaks, loopholes, offshore shelters, are all ways the rich take handouts. Even the mortgage interest deduction is a handout to rich people that deprives the government of billions of dollars of revenue. Ask a rich person and they will tell you they are entitled to that free money from the government.

But ask the same person about giving a few dollars to be sure that every child in the USA is fed, has medical care and education and the rich he/she will likely go off about those people need to get jobs, work, no free handouts-- and by the way where is my latest check from Uncle Sam for doing nothing?

Hehe the most amusing comments are when someone takes time to post a comment saying they read the blog and don't like it and people should not be posting the kind of blog topic they don't like.

Imagine these are the same weirdos who wrote the fcc to complain about the super bowl halftime show because o and Shakira somehow offended them.

Don't read it. Change the channel.

I definitely qualify as a boomer but I believe the minimum wage should be increased. Maybe not to $15 but an increase is needed. But where you loose me is when you say a minimum wage needs to be a living wage. It's never been a living wage. So what's changed? Can someone please explain why a minimum wage job now has to pay enough to support a family of four?

It's funny when you say something that makes sense, they respond with, "Have you ever been to a third world country?" They want us to be a third world country when it's convenient, yet they want to round Mexicans up and deport them when it's convenient. I guess that's just American values today, huh? I mean Afghanistan values today, huh? Sorry, I got the countries mixed up.

"Borrowing from the future isn't entitlement. It us the basis of all insurance and supported by hard science and math............
Etc.
No more than investing in a startup or stock market"

I just can't copy that much stupid. There is so much fundamental misunderstanding in that drivel that it's impossible to address it all or even care to. Its an indication of some type of brain dysfunction that's not repairable. I'd recommend some basic macro econ courses but this idiot thinks 2 + 2 = -3 so wouldn't help.

Anyway, apparently some of you need this:

Definition of entitlement: right granted by law or contract (especially a right to benefits)
“entitlements make up the major part of the federal budget”

Social Security, Medicare, etc are, by definition, entitlements so don't try to play word games. Unless we agree to change the benefits and/or funding, they will both essentially be bankrupt within 12 to 20 years. That's math and science. At that point when they can no longer support themselves, they will require the US Treasury to fund them from higher taxes, higher federal borrowing and/or lower benefits. There's no magic bullet that saves you, singing kumbaya around the fire in solidarity will not keep the lights on or pay the doctor.

You are just fucked. You are now Greece with north of 100% debt to GDP. At that point, your entire budget goes to interest payments. There is nothing left for defense, entitlement transfer payments, a post office, or the IRS ( i like that last part).

Social Security is essentially a Ponzi scheme only supported by everyone's faith that the Fed's will pay up, however if you read the law....There is no guarantee, they can change the rules anytime they like. Your tax money goes in, a little gets taken off the top for government admin, then it goes out the back door to pay the old guy getting the checks. Your money doesn't go into some account building up til you retire ready then to start getting paid. The guy that's STILL working is paying your deadbeat retired ass, now!

It continues til the money runs out and you get fucked. Just stop being stupid and let's all find a reasonable solution.

Let's make it really simple for stupidguy69 or whatever. Get as many credit cards, banks, personal friends to loan you money. Then live way beyond your means for as long as you can until you run out of money. Then come tell us about all your human "rights" to medical care, housing, food, private jet, blowjobs, etc. and why we should be ashamed for not letting you have it all.

Watching you post is like having front row seats at the proverbial train wreck.
Just stop, for the love of whatever deity you worship.

It was broken down in the simplest terms possible and you came back with nothing? I get that your ideology is more important to you than your rationality. You need help and I'm always willing to assist the uninformed. Read a book, educate yourself, here's a start:

Adam Smith - The Wealth of Nations
Paul Samuelson - any of his many economics books
Thomas Sowell -

Being a follower of "Identity" politics as you most likely are, you should especially like Sowell. Black, son of a handmaid who's father died before he was born, went on to earn his PhD in economics, then become one of the great writers on race, economics, etc. Libertarian, by the way, not Dem or Rep.

I was at the grocery store yesterday. An enormous woman in front of me was paying with her EBT card (food stamps) and WIC (Women Infants and Children) coupons. She was sporting about $3K worth of tattoos and she was blabbing on her iPhone. She had a mani/pedi with all the sparkles and stickers. She had 3 fat kids with her. Her 13 year old had herself a phone too. Only in Commiefornia.

When I was a kid I had minimum wage jobs. I lived in an apartment with 2 roommates while I went to school. I wasn't trying to raise a family on those wages... And I wasn't trying to make a career out of McDonalds or Sea World. Guess what's going to happen to the price of a loaf of bread or gallon of milk or a hamburger when kids are making $20 an hour? The people who will suffer from this attempt to artificially manipulate free markets are the people on fixed incomes.

BTW if you can't or wont develop some skills that can earn you more for your time, then resign yourself to living in an apartment with 3 other people. Oh and don't have kids. You don't have what it takes to create responsible citizens.

Please - DO NOT START THE SCANDANAVIAN BULLSHIT.

It is a very small, VERY homogenous society. They do not take many "asylum" seekers nor barely any immigrants.

$15 an hour is minimum wage in many cities. If you are an adult on minimum wage then that is your own challenge.

And Bernie said on TV - day 1 he makes illegals citizens - and they also get the free college and healthcare. If you believe that is possible and not a complete Shit Sammich then you most likely make minimum wage - because you would have to be a dumb fuck to think it is reality.
