Locked. No further comments permitted.Anyone signing up for a cruise?

Tags: Current Events

I made a life decision to never cruise again after news of the great poop cruise of 2013.

If I were on that ship near San Fran... I’d have to call a friend with a boat... jump ship and swim/float til he picked me up.

Glad iPhones are waterproof now.

Interesting scenario...If you just said "later" and jumped overboard and into your buddies boat, what do the authorities do? Arrest you and your buddy? You could be infected. Shoot you? Torpedo the boat? You are an American citizen being held against you will.

Scenarios like this could play out wherever a quarantine is ordered, we are not under Marshall Law. Maybe this is how the revolution starts...

Would hate to see you go but nuclear response on you and your buddy would be appropriate!

Something small and unobtrusive like a suitcase neutron bomb so we could re-use the boat.

I'm not a lawyer (thank God) but I'm pretty sure there are laws on the books that make it totally legal to enforce quarantines

remember the fist planeload of people from China (thank you Connie Kalitta) and one guy said "hell no, I'm in the U.S. now and I'm just going home so fuck you!"

remember what happened next?

I'm sure that this blog was meant to be a joke (hopefully), but let's consider a real world example:

A man was sent home to self-quarantine, but instead of staying home and away from people, he went to a party.

Let's say the party had 100 people, ten got sick and one ended up dying. Can the person who was sent home to self-quarantine be charged with murder by recklessly exposing people to the virus?

This is a true story (see article), but it is unclear if the person infected others. This is a hypothetical that will likely happen.

Where did you get the idea that anyone thinks Covad is a hoax?

It's not but it's also not the end of the world or even as bad as the H1N1 "Swine Flu"....not will it be.
Contrary to some reports, Obama handled that fine and so is Trump with $8.3B committed.

If you weren't such a partisan hack, people might take you more seriously. You're actually a bigger shill for the MSDNC party line than anyone with a zero network on here.

From April 12, 2009, to April 10, 2010, in the United States, there were 60.8 million cases of swine flu, 274,304 hospitalizations and 12,469 deaths, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated.

So far, the stats aren't even close. 12,469 deaths from H1N1 vs. 15 so far from Covad

If the projections (below) are correct, COVID-19 is much, much worse than swine flu. Remember that COVID-19 has only been identified for 3 months. I am reposting the information below to dispel any misinformation on how serious a problem this truly is (let's hope it doesn't actually happen).

Although the World Health Organization (WHO) says the death rate is 3.4%, that is of known cases of Coronavirus. Since our response has been so bad in the US in producing and sending out tests, those infected may be much higher than reported, so the actual percentage of deaths should be a lot less. Let's say it is around 1% for argument's sake.

The Coronavirus spreads very quickly and effectively, and it is claimed that 40% to 70% of the US population will be infected within one year (it was revised down to 20-60%, but I've read 70% in other articles). Let's use the 40% number:

331 million people x 1% x 40% = 1,324,000 people would die in the United States alone

Or at 20% (best case scenario):

662,000 people in the US would die or 30,800,000 worldwide would die

Again, those at high risk are the elderly and those with chronic health issues. The healthcare system in the US is not prepared for this. South Korea's death rate is 0.6%, but their healthcare system is much, much better than ours.

The vast majority of the US population will be fine, but the elderly and those with chronic health conditions should try to isolate themselves in some way until a viable treatment is developed, which will likely be at least one year to 18 months away.

Regarding Trump: he is completely irresponsible in his attempts to downplay the risks associated with COVID-19 (he needs to keep quiet and let the doctors and scientists give the public information on it). Trump made substantial budget cuts to the CDC's ability to address pandemics, he's shit the bed when it comes to getting a test out in a timely manner (up to today, only 1,895 tests have been conducted in the US as compared to 140,000 tests conducted in South Korea), and naming Pence (a science denier) to oversee this is simply boneheaded.

You get credit for hanging in there unlike the rest of the HX progressives.
Apparently, they've all decided to head back to their safe place in mom's basement

Based on other credible information, I disagree with MA19 and WHO. Unfortunately, reliable info is impossible to get from Chinese authorities but you can safely bet that total infections there are off by a factor of 2 or 3, at least. Basing death percentage rates on Chinese stats is completely unreliable.

Time will tell which stats are accurate but I am skeptical of the ones MA19 is using.

Dude L,

it isn't a hoax, but it isn't as big a deal as it is being made out to be. So because it is being used to tank our economy and hurt Trump's administration, it is a hoax.

First, the democrats tried the Russian interference angle, then impeachment, now this.. anything to help their cause.

You and people like you are naive if you think otherwise, and obviously you do.

Our media is corrupt, politicians are corrupt, and you all that don't see that Trump as obnoxious as he is sometimes, at least gives a shit about his country.

Dude its not being used to tank out economy you need to inform yourself.
Part of the reason for the stock market drop last week was because of supply chain disruptions of goods coming from Asia because of the virus. Also Trump speech when he returned from India where he contradicted the members of the CDC right in front of them hurt the economy.

Trumps verbal responsives to the crisis is what sinking him. Nothing and nobody else.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been.
The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way
through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy
means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge'."
- Isaac Asimov

The problem is that Trump (an idiot) has emboldened those who follow him into denying facts and shunning science, who then make up facts to support their mistaken beliefs. They seem strangely proud of their stupidity and their lack of knowledge.

If you buy the conspiracy theory that this is a hoax created by the Democrats to hurt Trump's chances of winning a second term, then follow the virus' progression in Italy and Iran. These countries are essentially shut down. Schools are closed. Venues are closed. Streets are empty. This is a serious problem and Trump is too stupid (and selfish) to understand that what he says publicly can dramatically affect the spread of the virus. But as the death count rises, even his supports are going to start distrusting anything that comes out of his mouth.

The only reason why I keep posting facts and reference articles on the Coronavirus outbreak is because I'm worried that the ill-informed are going to get people killed. I hope the outbreak turns out to be less severe than it appears it will be.

Irony much, Dood? Telling someone "you need to inform yourself"

The hoax is not the virus but the "Dems criticism of his admins response to the virus". As Lou pointed out, there are nothing but Dem hoaxes. Biden has expressed an interest in working across the aisle which is very encouraging, if true. Legit criticism, if based on fact and data, is a good thing. But, at some point, both parties working together to make the world work better is the best thing.

CDC's fucking shit up is not helping though and they seem to be doing so independently of whoever is in the WH.

Very pithy M19, quoting Asimov.

You should be more open about the context of why he said it. Here it is and it is as pertinent to Dems as Reps.....or not. There is nothing here more peculiar to Trump than the anti-intellectualism of Bernie's Socialism or even your form of Progressivism.

"In 1980, scientist and writer Isaac Asimov argued in an essay that “there is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been.” That year, the Republican Party stood at the dawn of the Reagan Revolution, which initiated a decades-long conservative groundswell that many pundits say may finally come to an end in November. GOP strategist Steve Schmidt (who has been regretful about choosing Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate in 2008) recently pointed to what he called “intellectual rot” as a primary culprit, and a cult-like devotion to irrationality among a certain segment of the electorate.

It’s a familiar contention. There have been critiques of American anti-intellectualism since the country’s founding, though whether or not that phenomenon has intensified, as Susan Jacoby alleged in The Age of American Unreason, may be a subject of debate. Not all of the unreason is partisan, as the anti-vaccination movement has shown. But “the strain of anti-intellectualism" writes Asimov, "has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.’”

Asimov’s primary examples happen to come from the political world. However, he doesn’t name contemporary names but reaches back to take a swipe at Eisenhower (“who invented a version of the English language that was all his own”) and George Wallace. Particularly interesting is Asimov’s take on the “slogan on the part of the obscurantists: ‘Don’t trust the experts!’” This language, along with charges of “elitism,” Asimov wryly notes, is so often used by people who are themselves experts and elites, “feeling guilty about having gone to school.” So many of the American political class’s wounds are self-inflicted, he suggests, but that’s because they are beholden to a largely ignorant electorate:

To be sure, the average American can sign his name more or less legibly, and can make out the sports headlines—but how many nonelitist Americans can, without undue difficulty, read as many as a thousand consecutive words of small print, some of which may be trisyllabic?

Asimov’s examples are less than convincing: road signs “steadily being replaced by little pictures to make them internationally legible” has more to do with linguistic diversity than illiteracy, and accusing television commercials of speaking their messages out loud instead of using printed text on the screen seems to fundamentally misunderstand the nature of the medium. Jacoby in her book-length study of the problem looks at educational policy in the United States, and the resistance to national standards that virtually ensures widespread pockets of ignorance all over the country. Asimov’s very short, pithy essay has neither the space nor the inclination to conduct such analysis.

Instead he is concerned with attitudes. Not only are many Americans badly educated, he writes, but the broad ignorance of the population in matters of “science… mathematics… economics… foreign languages…” has as much to do with Americans' unwillingness to read as their inability.

There are 200 million Americans who have inhabited schoolrooms at some time in their lives and who will admit that they know how to read… but most decent periodicals believe they are doing amazingly well if they have circulation of half a million. It may be that only 1 per cent—or less—of Americans make a stab at exercising their right to know. And if they try to do anything on that basis they are quite likely to be accused of being elitists.

One might in some respects charge Asimov himself of elitism when he concludes, “We can all be members of the intellectual elite.” Such a blithely optimistic statement ignores the ways in which economic elites actively manipulate education policy to suit their interests, cripple education funding, and oppose efforts at free or low cost higher education. Many efforts at spreading knowledge—like the Chatauquas of the early 20th century, the educational radio programs of the 40s and 50s, and the public television revolution of the 70s and 80s---have been ad hoc and nearly always imperiled by funding crises and the designs of profiteers.

Nonetheless, the widespread (though hardly universal) availability of free resources on the internet has made self-education a reality for many people, and certainly for most Americans. But perhaps not even Isaac Asimov could have foreseen the bitter polarization and disinformation campaigns that technology has also enabled. Needless to say, “A Cult of Ignorance” was not one of Asimov’s most popular pieces of writing. First published on January 21, 1980 in Newsweek, the short essay has never been reprinted in any of Asimov’s collections.

@GoBallsDeep What's the point of cutting and pasting an article analyzing Asimov's essay?

Obviously, what I quoted is my point. Knowledge, science and facts are important, especially when faced with a health crisis that happens once every 100 years.

I remember watching the news on TV when I was a teenager that reported on a kid that died while attempting to walk across the LA river while it was flooding. While some people would think that was a tragedy, I thought that that boy's death was proof that Darwin was right. Some people just have to die. It isn't shocking that people who do stupid, dangerous things die. Smart, reasonable people generally survive and thrive. The problem is that this country is currently being run by a selfish idiot and I really don't have much confidence that an idiot will address a crisis adequately.

And FYI, I am an independent and I've voted both Democrat and Republican in the past.

MA19, the point is that your quote of Asimov is ephemeral, has no context and applies to your tribe as well as Trumps. Your problem is that you actually think you're smarter than all those people that have real jobs in the WH that get things done. I'm no fan of Trump's and will clearly agree that he can act immaturely, rashly, stupidly at times. An intellectual he is not.

But there are people there that are adults that will get it done. 1.9m test kits are going out and production is just ramping up.

Neither side has a lock on stupid.

Dood is your poster child.

I rest my case on Dood, he doesn't even get that there is info in that analysis that supports some of his progressive points.

As to you, MA19, I'm a Libertarian and have not voted for Dem or Rep at the national level in a long time. I don't defend Trump, I find him repugnant. I do call it like it is without the baggage of MSDNC or Fux hanging around my neck.

Both the far left and far right can suck my ass.

As I said previously, MA19, i respectfully disagree with Dr. Lipsitch's analysis and your prognosis re Covad 19.

I grant that anything is possible, a la the Spanish Flu of 1918. However, in this case, I don't think we go to that extreme. The next months will tell.

Yes! Flights are dirt cheap, they're giving away seats.

Somebody posted in another blog about a Harvard doctor who said WHO's numbers are bullshit and the rate is closer to .1%, that's 1/10th of 1%.

While directors of the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have given a lower rate of 1 percent than WHO's 3.4%.

WHO has had its share of fuckups being a U.N. agency and all, so it's just 1 opinion amongst many.

Here it is
