Hand sanitizer is just isopropyl alcohol suspended in gel. The alcohol is what gives it efficacy. Anything else - lavender, rose petals, red curry... it's just there to boost the price and make it smell better.

the ALCOHOL will dry out a
your skin. Dry skin cracks.

hand sanitizer works no better than Listerine.
after a while, the alcohol will burn underneath layers of good skin, and crack those too...
allowing sneezing into your hands, a great way for COVID19 to enter and infect your BODY!

Washing your hands for 20 seconds is all you need. Washing is better than using hand sanitizer, which should only be used when washing your hands is unavailable.

Do not use hot water (lukewarm is fine) since hot water doesn't help kill more viruses/germs/pathogens, but ot water will dry out and potentially crack your skin. Cracked skin allows for easier infections.

Use lotion to prevent your skin from drying and cracking.

Go to the CDC site and see what they recommend. It's either vigorous hand washing with soap or use of hand sanitizer with at least 60% isopropyl content.

Tea Tree oil smells pretty - I use it regularly - but it isn't going to block the virus. That comes from lathering soap to remove particulates that might contain the virus from your hands.

Proper hygiene with proper hand washing you should be doing on a regular basis any ways regardless of flu. So please stop panicking and wash your hands with soap and water (best to wash for a full minute and not just 20 seconds)

A voice of reason.

In a pinch you can also use gasoline and a lit match.

About three months ago I purchased a large bottle of hand sanitizer and was thinking that was a waste of money until now.

While the primary way to spread coronavirus is via coughing and sneezing, viruses can survive on hard surfaces like coins for days in some cases. U.S dollars, a blend of fabric and paper, are harder for viruses to stick to.

I would think gas pumps, hand rails and door knobs too.

OMG! EPA has a list of disinfectants that are effective. Few are usable on the body.

If you buy something else, at least read the label that it promises to kill something instead of anti-this or anti-that.

Washing your hands with soapy products is best, well-proven. You can rinse more away with soap than killing them with alcohol. For the germs, it's like moving a fish from seawater to freshwater.

70% isopropyl alcohol is the gold standard. Even better, ethanol, drinkable alcohol, is less toxic if breathing in or drinking it of course. Voka is only 40%. Over 70% is also not good because there is less water content.

To keep your hands moist, 5% weight of glycerin in water will do the job. It's also in many body care products.

Life is full of compromises, depending on your priorities.

Wouldn't nitrite gloves be more effective than hand sanitizer? If the answer is yes. What stock should I be buying for the panic?

I know a world renowned viral expert, he said if you want to make your own sanitizer, you have to use 2/3 90% isopropyl alcohol and 1/3 aloe vera to make it strong enough to kill the germs from this and other viruses....anything else is going to be too weak, make your own so you know you're making the best.

Soap breaks down the coronavirus. Its RNA is surrounded by an oily coating that dissolves on contact with soap. (Source NYT)

This means wash your hands. It doesn't mean eat Tide Pods or drink liquid soap.
