"Hey cheer up! The black plague only killed 100 million people. And civilization was restored in less than 400 years. It wasn't the end of the world!"
|
|
Smart ass, my point is that is NOT the end of the world.
COVID-19 lethality ~3% (final number will change with time as post impact numbers are assessed)
Yersinia pestis lethality ranges from 30-60%
Meteor impacts and mega volcano eruptions: 100% lethality declining with distance.

100 million is barely a spec in india or china

All of this is impersonal until it’s someone you know.
And now it’s someone I know at Santa Monica. No, not dead, but infected and may have spread to people in our mutual social circles.

50 dead out of 330 million is .0000015%
we better panic some more

https://www.worldometers.info/ has data on all kinds of stuff, including Corona virus. It's an apolitical site. According to their numbers, 47.7% of people known to have the virus recovered from it, 3.7% died, and another 3.8% are in critical condition. The other 44.6% are in mild condition.
The number of known cases increased by about 50% in the past week.
Of course, the known information is insufficient since testing has been insufficient.
But in America, there's 2,499 known cases, 55 deaths, and 49 recovered. So "just" 2% died but less than 2% have recovered. Nobody really yet knows how deadly it is. We just know it's spreading fast. That's why people are panicking- not because they are afraid the world is going to end as if struck by meteor, Dr. Pangloss.

I don't understand this emphasis on testing
there is no specific treatment for this virus and if a person is sick they will get the same hydration and rest advise regardless if its this Chinese flu or something else and the same precautions against spreading germs
if YOU are sick, stay home and infect your own family instead of going out and spreading your sickness 'cos I don't want whatever you have even if it's just a simple cold
a great doctor I know tells me, "I'll tell you when to panic and this is not the time"
|
|
I have never showed up with a cold or any sickness. It is only common sense and respect for the other person to be healthy when you come to visit.

Besides...how can anyone really have fun when they are not feeling well......
I want to have my partner at full speed and me the same......

At the time of the Black Plague, 100 million was a very significant percentage of the worlds population.

I think our medical knowledge and capability is a bit better now than the time of the Black Plague.

Not too long ago before COVIV-19, I had to cancel on someone because I got a cough the night before meeting the next day. I take illnesses very seriously no matter what the condition a person finds themselves on.
If your body doesn't feel right, take a break and stay home to recover.
I never heard back from that person, not even a slight get well soon.
Looking back, a right decision was made on my part.

Sighs and ignores Al.
One thing will remain the same, damn the women on HX are fine. Some of the finest on the planet.

^ no shit! I hope they don't all die!

Hey OP, how can you say the lethality is about 3% without knowing how many people have the virus?
It has been stated by that many will not know they are infected.
I for one am not worried about this virus. To me it's another flu. Flu kills 10s of thousands every year.

"I don't understand this emphasis on testing...if YOU are sick, stay home and infect your own family instead of going out and spreading your sickness"
You answered your own question. If diagnoses were available, people with mild sniffles wouldn't be directed to self-quarantine and miss work. Congress is trying to give tax credits to employers who pay their employees to stay home if they have a cough. Without knowing who has the virus, it's kind of hard to quarantine them. There's other reasons, too, but that's probably the main one.

Humaniplex: where the Worlds great thinkers go to think

Two things about testing. They are not sure if test will register the virus if you are not symptomatic. So expanded testing may not be as helpful as everyone would like.
Personally, I would like everyone to get tested if it were feasible. I think we would find out that the numbers are a lot higher than anyone would guess, which is actually a good thing. Right now that 3% mortality rate is based on known numbers, but they are only testing people that were really sick, so you’re going to have a higher perceived mortality rate. If the number of people that tested positive quadrupled, the number of deaths stays the same, and the mortality rate drops to less than 1%.
That being said, if you’re one of those that dies, it’s 100%. But the people at primary risk are the elderly and those with serious underlying medical conditions.

I agree with the op even though I do not have the same credentials but I did stay at a holiday inn.

You guys are all fucking crazy!
I have it on good authority from MostlyAnnoying2020, that millions will be dead very soon and civilization will collapse.
You should shun your neighbor, no better yet, kill them before they get within say 20 yards or you will be zombified too.
Beg, borrow and steal all the TP you can find, carry it to a cave in the mountains and hunker down for at least a year. Tell me your address and I'll watch your place, make sure nobody steals your shit.
This has been an HX Public Service Announcement.
