Last time the federal government “gave” the citizens “free” money, they took it all back on the next year’s taxes. All they’re doing is giving you your tax refund early and calling it a gift. West Wing made an episode about it. Instead of spending it, most people used it to pay down credit card debt which defeated the purpose of putting the money out there.

Enough already, read the definition, see the examples, understand it and use the term correctly or STFU......please.
Be very clear that free market capitalism (FMC) is what's created the wealth and technology that allows you idiots to NOT be subsistence living in a mud hovel with no healthcare like most third world countries ruled by despots, tin pot dictators, or socialists. Scandinavia is NOT socialist and there is no other successful example to speak of. If you like a government funded program, then fine, advocate for it but don't think for a moment that this country will ever be socialist as defined.
FMC is not perfect and requires a government to provide a framework of rules to abide by because there are always asshole bad actors, like some of you, that fuck up. FMC is what allows the "invisible hand" of millions of free individuals to make the billions of decisions made every day with our time and money and abilities.
The unique and sometimes messy American experiment is lost on half of you dumb fucks and I know that practically none of you have ever taken even one econ class, yet fancy yourselves experts in political economies.
