I agree with Kaiser but want to push it a bit further. I read an account from someone who noted what type of person would survive a Nazi concentration camp. The people who were defeatists and pessimists usually succumbed to the strain and didn't survive. The people who had a less defeatist attitude were more likely to make it.
The next question is to ask how to develop a more hopeful and resilient type of personality. Is it even possible to do this, or is our personality set once we become adults? I think people can change, but it is going to take a lot of work to fight against the thought patterns you may have developed. Self-help books and therapy might help. I myself need to work on this to become a happier person.
