I have.
I can’t imagine living that life. Either so mentally twisted, physically disabled, addicted or unmotivated/lazy that you don’t function in society.
It’s hard to sit still long enough to watch TV shows I want to watch... there is so much to do taking care of the houses, working on projects that produce revenue, hanging with family and friends, not to mention the leisure activities I enjoy.
I can’t think of anything about my life I would change right know (other than developing the discipline to eat right ALL of the time) My BIGGEST problem is I can eat whatever I want... whenever I want while trying to decide if I should go shooting, play golf or tinker on one of my vehicles.
So living in a cardboard shanty... with no bathroom, shower, refrigerator... having to worry about who might sneak up on you while you sleep. People constantly stealing your stuff...
I feel bad for all of them.
To live in the U.S. in 2019, with all of it benefits and not enjoy most of them... is really, really sad.
So this morning I’ll drive 100 miles to Santa Monica to work with a church that’s serving thanksgiving dinner to those who don’t have...
It’s not much. It doesn’t really change anything in the grand scheme... but it’s a momentary kindness that feels good to everyone involved... Both givers and receivers.

I keep a box of harmonicas in my car.
Give a man a harmonica and he transforms from a creepy pandhandler into a souful bluesman.

When we took the train ride from Williams Arizona to the Grand Canyon, they were selling the worlds smallest harmonica on the train. Not sure why but I had to buy one.

I've tried giving breakfast sandwiches to the guys who sometimes hang at my Starbucks by JWA. On more than one occasion they've refused the sandwiches. I won't give those dudes cash. Another guy who slept in his car, I'd bring him plates of food and slip him Jackson's. Found out he was working at the hotel down the street, banquets. I told my SO who is a concierge there. I believe they hooked him up with more hours and a place to take a shower, have not seen him in years. Hope he's doing okay.
Monthly I give to OC Rescue Mission automatically, because there by the grace of God go I. Hopefully I never need their services but they get the 2nd most of my charitable dollars. The rest goes to a Veterans charity out of San Antonio that has raised 18 mil in the last 10 years with only 1 paid admin, the rest all volunteer. They do lots of good work for the needy veteran families.

Without naming the company, we go out during the cold holidays and donate sleeping gear and tents to the less fortunate at the shelter. Gotta to have some kind of rest and peace as you try to survive.
Worst part was finding. Someone I knew from my youth on this side of the world, at the shelter.
But for the grace of god...

Very good blog. 👍

I've been in South America quite often, and recently the prevalence of Venezuelans fleeing their country has been the gloomiest thing I've ever witnessed.
I’ve never seen more empty eyes. It’s more than sad.
In an effort to help, I’ve donated many Subway sandwiches ( yes, there are franchises in SA) and countless pizzas. Most typically, these are to people and families working and living on the streets in Quito, Bogota, and surrounding cities.

This blog should have been titled "Homeless Human".
What about the homeless women in our country and abroad?
|
|
I didn't encounter a homeless woman it was a guy, hence the subject homeless guy.

'Have you ever seen a homeless person so down and out that you gave them money without them even asking?'

As I was walking into a grocery, a guy asked me to buy him some food. I hooked him up with sandwich, chips and a drink. Brought it outside to him and he said thanks! And took the bag, walked right by me and went straight into the store to return for money. Oh well I guess he needed money

I was headed to my car after work and saw a woman hauling a huge bag of cans over her shoulder. She had a cast on her free wrist. I said "It looks like you're working hard today." and she gave me a smile. I said "Let me give you a little head start." and gave her the $40 I was going to blow on drinks after work. She burst out crying. Man it was sad. I wished I had more cash on me. I've been looking out for her but haven't seen her again.

...and our fucking government has its priorities all fucked up. We cant even take care of our own fucking people in a country that's classified a super power. Unfucking believable.

I give. Regardless
I feel like paying it forward

“We cant even take care of our own fucking people in a country that's classified a super power.”
I guess that is true if you believe it is the government’s job to take care of people.
The U.S. is the one of the only places in the world where you can be on welfare and a diet at the same time.

Whole network, money making!!!

Can't think of a situation where I looked at someone homeless and just dropped cash on them without them asking.
But I have offered to buy them food if at a restaurant or bought them a bottle of water and something to eat when outside an AMPM or 7 Eleven.
Have had both thrown back at me as well on two separate occasions.
It's harder to give cash as I've come to learn some don't always use it for what your intentions are for.

|
I agree with Liz. If you give someone money under the condition that they conform to your values, it’s not a gift, it’s your attempt to control them. It may be that self-medication is the only thing that makes life endurable for them.

Thankfully I've never been in that position, and wouldn't wish it on anyone.
But if someone I knew were in the position where a few hundred bucks is the difference between a roof over there head with a warm meal at night vs unconscious in an ally, I'd rather help provide the former, than risk they fall on the latter on their own by just giving them cash to do what they want.
My intentions definitely matter to me if it's coming out of my pocket to help them out. I certainly dont want to help them dig themselves into a bigger hole if I can avoid it.
If someone comes to paint my fence, definitely it's on them how they choose to spend their well earned cash.
