"Tony,
Takeshi Terauchi and Bunnys rawk.
Good taste, man."
Domo arigato gozaimasu. Takeshi Terauchi was a professionally trained shamisen player in the 1960's when he first saw the Ventures perform in Japan. He adopted the style himself and soon his band became one of the openers for the Ventures. Apparently he and the Ventures have had a tight relationship over the years - the Ventures are HUGE in Japan and in fact Nokie Edwards and Bob Bogle have written a number of compositions that have become big enka (Japanese pop music) hits:

Right on, Tony.
That's some good shit.
Cool history, too.
|

I can dig garage bands and have played in a few garages myself...
Classic 1960s LA bands in the garage/psychedelic band vibe:
|
|
Some LA bands I used to see in the late 70's and early 80's:
(Trivia Question - The guest keyboard player on the third video was the band's manager and played for a somewhat noted local outfit earlier in his career. Who was he?)

|
Dude, I didn't even watch the video but I know...
Ray Manzarek

I love The Bags!

"Dude, I didn't even watch the video but I know... Ray Manzarek"
Cool... I actually had beer with John and Exene a couple of times when they lived off of Hyperion in Silver Lake...

Fucking Pembrush made me think John Doe died.
|
|
John Doe is still kicking last I heard. I used to see X regularly when they played at the Hong Kong Cafe in Chinatown. They shared a few bills with another band I used to see and help out on occasion (the Human Hands). At one time or another I moved equipment or hauled around band members in our 4WD wagon (name withheld not to incriminate me). I remember driving with all the refugees from PHX - David Wiley, Juan Gomez (Human Hands, Paul Cutler (B People, 45 Grave), and Don Bolles (Germs, 45 Grave) with everyone singing along to "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" on KRLA...
|
|
I know John Doe's still alive, Bro.
And I totally hear you about not incriminating.
People you know are people I know and I don't want them knowing.
|
|
I love that "driving with all the refugees" anecdote.
|
|
Don Bolles is still kickin' too.
|
|
"Don Bolles is still kickin' too" and so is Mary Bat Thing AKA Dinah Cancer:

When I was attending UCDavis me and the SO went into SF to blow off some steam. We were in a bar with live music and sitting fairly close to the stage. About a half hour later in walked some guys and I turned to her and said 'That guy looks like Backbay Bob from the Dead Kennedys.'. Turned out it was Bob and they were going on a tour and wanted to tune up before a live audience. They did the whole set they were planning on doing as well as took some requests from the crowed.
Was really a fun night. And we were almost front row center.
Atticus Finch
|
|
I love those stories, Atticus.
13 years ago I saw Grinderman up at Slim's in SF. Nick Cave closed the set with the Bad Seeds' "Deanna". Jumping up on stage to sing with Nick were DK's Jello Biafra and Black Flag's Henry Rollins. That was a very cool moment in time, and a great fucking show.

GBD, you're so old I could easily make it a 10-parter just on your experiences alone.

Link it for me, Goddess...

You were at that show?
That's rad. I would of loved to go to that show, but I'm not as old and wrinkled as you.

Melody Land for Sonny & Cher
Anaheim Convention Center for Iron Butterfly

Still remember George Benson swinging it in a small bar in Redondo Beach before he got big.
BB King at the old Miramar Hotel torn down in 2012, so close I could count the cracks in old Lucille.
Watching Ron Carter play a bass was a sense of wonder how that was even possible.
Same with Stanley Clarke.
