i see this...i smile. when are people, companies and sports leagues going to wake the fuck up to these fuckers...13 cops injured and 60million in damages. Every week i keep saying this is it, but it's not...i guess we will find out in november if they got the little clues and messages THE LEFT are scattering all over the place before the vote

At least one organizer called the looting tantamount to "reparations."

“I don’t care if someone decides to loot a Gucci or a Macy’s or a Nike store, because that makes sure that person eats,” said Ariel Atkins, a BLM organizer, according to NBC Chicago. “That makes sure that person has clothes.”

“That is reparations,” Atkins continued. “Anything they wanted to take, they can take it because these businesses have insurance.”

You have a chance right now to educate yourself on the history of white supremacy this country was founded on and designed to maintain. You could actually use the internet to read and learn all about this country's uncomfortable white history. Go! Go now!

Aww, there went your chance. Wait, here comes another one... and another after that. There's no excuse for you to be this uneducated. It's totally up to you. Don't look now. Your white privilege is showing...

I've been a victim of 'reparations' more than once in my life. Once at gunpoint when I was a kid working at McDonald's.

Republicans and 2A enthusiasts are often former Democrats who've been victims of impromptu, ad hoc reparations. I know that's me.

I grew up in Pasadena, CA during the 50s and 60s and Blacks and Whites
seem to get along. Many of the parents of the Black kids I grew up with had
decent jobs, and some were educated and owned successful businesses.
And the Civil Rights Act of 1964 helped many Blacks get a college degree
and get good paying jobs with the government.
I guess in other places Blacks were denied the opportunity to improve their
lives in spite of the changes in the law.
It's my opinion that it's the Asian Americans that are still in the back of the
bus that is now driven by Blacks.
Most Asian American are for merit. They dominate any standardized
test, such as the ACT and SAT but the Liberals want diversity of race
Yet most Asian Americans are Democrats.

Good Work, Starfish. You've really educated yourself on the experience of American citizens who are people of color. You speak with such authority on the subject. That's why you focus on the behavior of the protestors instead of the police.

You are clearly a kind, fair, deeply informed and caring American. Its also why when you see people who have been institutionally and personally oppressed for centuries (and their white allies) stand up and say enough, you immediately run to your keyboard and complain about them instead of the obvious oppression. Because America is for the whites, amirite?

Yes. You are reading English correctly since that is almost exactly what I wrote. Sorry but I won't be shutting the fuck up ever. And, unlike you, I would fight for your right to say whatever political speech you desired.

You have every right to disagree that people of color (which, yes, includes black people) have been oppressed in this country for centuries. An understanding of our country's history shows that you are wrong to hold that opinion, but you have a right to not know our own history.

@GaijinTony

""You have a chance right now to educate yourself on the history of white supremacy this country was founded on and designed to maintain."

How do you come to that conclusion again?"

I'm glad you asked, Tony.

The first slaves were forced to come to this land 401 years ago. The early financial foundation of our society was built on slavery. Slavery was not only not abolished in our founding documents, but enshrined in them. The debate to keep slavery as the foundation of our economy preceded the creation and signing of the Declaration of Independence and debated heavily again just 11 years later during the creation of our Constitution. Slavery won both times. The first "police" forces (even though they weren't called that) came into existence in order to catch runaway slaves. On top of being enslaved and dehumanized, they were routinely beaten, lynched, raped and on and on and on.

The debate to abolish slavery raged on for decades eventually leading to a fiercely fought, years long civil war. It wasn't until 1865, as the civil war was nearing its end, was slavery finally abolished. Half the country was not happy about it. Black people being seen as less than fully human was not only a founding belief of our country, but was actually codified into law when they were described as 3/5ths of a human being.

After the abolishment of slavery, a different but still virulent form of oppression took hold. Economically, they were largely shut out in the south and many parts of the north as well. Sharecroppers were kept in debt to their landlords. Many black-owned business were destroyed. The list is long. The Jim Crow era of laws and discrimination and oppression came into being not long after. If you're unfamiliar what the Jim Crow era, it's easily researched on the internet. The oppression of the Jim Crow era kept most black people poor and unable to vote (even though black men were legally given the right to vote in 1870) and unable to receive an equitable education.

White power and supremacy continued to reign supreme in this country despite some basic rights being afforded to black people in the later part of the 19th century which gave rise to voices like W.E.B Dubois and Marcus Garvey in the early 20th Century. But it took a massive decade long campaign led by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other leaders within and without the Southern Christian Leadership Council to move our federal government to enact the Civil Rights Act and Fair Housing Act in the mid-1960s. Protestors marched, were beaten by police and racists, and often died in their fight to end separate but unequal access to the voting booth, public education, zoning rights, transportation, safe neighborhoods (and protection by and from the police) and for basic decent treatment and standing within our society. You know, basically everything white people have been taking for granted since the inception of the country. Black women finally received the right to vote in 1965, just 55 years ago.

But passing legislation doesn't change behavior or reboot a culture built upon the idea of whites being better than blacks. The oppression of black people continued largely unabated, especially in the south where who your Sheriff was made the difference between these new laws being enforced or not. Without an equal ability to register to vote, vote and run for office (even though it was now technically legal for blacks to do so), they had to fight an uphill battle for representation within local, state and federal governments.

Long standing and engrained racist beliefs, the sense that black people were dumber, less reliable, lazy or just downright evil remained throughout every level of our society. This made it difficult for black people to be hired over white people even when they were more qualified. It made if more difficult for them to get elected or paid equally or buy a home in the neighborhood they wanted to live in or travel without their lives or well-being endangered. And the list goes on. This not only will keep the household wealth lower than those of whites, but will lead to unspeakable despair and depression. Alcoholism, familial abuse, drug use and the financial and emotional hardships that come with it.

The history and culture of racism within our almost exclusively white police and judicial system (lawyers, prosecutors, judges and juries) meant vastly higher rates of incarceration and for longer sentences than whites (for the same offenses). Incarceration means the break up of the family and the inability to earn a living for that family (which was already harder than it was for whites).

The FBI routinely infiltrated and spied on black political figures and movements. Police routinely harrassed, beat, murdered and jailed blacks at much higher rates than whites. The fact that still today, America is one of the only countries to fund their public schools from property taxes instead of equally across the board means rich neighborhoods have better schools than poor areas. This practice was created (and kept in place) as a result of racism. You can research that history as well, if you want.

This history of racism and white supremacy isn't taught in our schools. White people control what is in our textbooks. If you truly care to learn this history, you have to seek it out yourself. But it's not hard. The facts are all there. The books with all the footnotes and research are all written. The documentaries (most of the necessary ones) have all been made. It's incumbent upon white people to understand on what this country was founded and how it is still engrained in our institutions (both governmental and otherwise) still today.

Has progress been made? Some. Our laws are better. With each new generation, children grow up with fewer racist parents, but racism is still everywhere in our country. In every town, at every level of society and government and business.

I hope that helped...

"This is not a blog about white supremacy. It’s a blog about looters. And to think otherwise cheapens any argument about racial inequality."

1. Most protestors aren't looting.

2. If you had put up with the police violence, harassment, institutional racism for decades that black have put up with and have tried to get people to notice and take meaningful action against non-violently, maybe juuuuuuuuust maybe you'd look a little more compassionately on a small group of people who lose it and just start breaking stuff.

3. White people have NEVER had to deal with the stuff black people have been facing their entire lives and instead of talking about the problem, you want to complain and rail against a few people who can't hold it together in the face of continued police violence and murder????

4. Your above statement is the perfect example of white privilege and being blind to it.

5. If you cared about your fellow human beings and knew your history, you'd never write such a thing.

6. A society in which all people are treated fairly is a better society for everyone. If you care about stopping looting, you should care about creating equal treatment and equal opportunity for everyone.

7. There is no argument about racial inequality. It is rampant throughout our society and has been from the inception of our beloved country.

8. If you want to cheapen the national discussion about racial inequality, the thing to do is to start a blog that distracts from it by railing against looters.

9. The protection of a property is nothing compared to the violence and structural/institutionalized "looting" of the black community that's been going on for centuries. That's like choking out a guy who you suspect of passing a bad $20 bill but looking the other way when corporations defraud the American consumer of billions of dollars (which happens every year).

10. The education all white people need is readily available to them, right now. You can attain it at any moment you choose.

Right. We know for a fact that the looters acted the way they did because of white supremacy and because of police brutality. This is just a normal response to being held back.

You realize that that might not be the case at all. We don’t know their motivations. Don’t assume EVERYTHING has to do with racism.

Maybe our resident white apologist, j502
Should educate himself on the other side of the discussion
Before he spouts the party line

One must always view with suspicion an opinion offered after the typical uninformed diatribe has been regurgitated.

J502, read with an open mind and understand that your natural inclination towards self-righteousness doesn't make you "right". Its still just your "opinion".

My friend, Mr. Deep, I've lived the other side of the argument. I'm a white male in America. But I think you need to look up the definition of an apologist. I'm not a white apologist. If anything, I'm an apologist for the oppressed in this country who quite understandably fly off the handle every now and then.

An apologist tries to justify and explain away the actions of a person or a group. I'm challenging the white community to educate themselves to the stark reality of people of color in this country, become aware of how they've never had to deal with what they deal with on a daily basis, learn about the structural and institutionalized oppression driven by racism (i.e. redlining) and actively work to put an end to it.

That is the opposite of a white apologist.

But you are correct about one thing, Balls, righteousness does not make one right. But facts do make one correct. The facts are what my opinion is based on. I suggest you acquaint yourself with them.

Or not. You can continue to support our current power structure that keeps white males relatively safe and secure at the exclusion of others. Or you can actively work to create a society that endeavors to make all human beings relatively safe and secure. It's totally and completely up to you.

Night Rider,

Of course you've got a point. I AM changing the subject. And looting isn't a good thing. But you're also missing the point. The larger point. The notion of ignoring the reason for the protests and only complaining about the few who did something wrong, is abhorent and a product of white privilege. Complaining about looting when there are so many larger and worse things happening everyday to people of color is like exclaiming All Lives Matter at a Black Lives Matter rally. Of course all lives matter. Nobody is saying some lives don't matter. Nobody is saying looting is good. So why complain about someone smoking a cigarette in your living room when your entire house is on fire?

What I'm about to ask you to do isn't easy, but imagine you're a black person who every day lives in fear of being pulled over by the police because they think you fit the description of a carjacker or something. Imagine having guns drawn on you, and the sheer terror running through your veins because of all the stories you've heard of black people being gunned down by police (I'm not just talking about the ones that have been captured on video recently, but all the ones you've never heard but black people have) or the family members you know who have been wrongfully accused, railroaded and convicted for something they've never done and are now in prison. Imagine the anger you feel welling up because now you're needlessly going to be late for work purely because of this suspicion that happens at such a disproportionate rate to people who look like you. And your boss already watches you like a hawk because he doesn't know any other black people and doesn't trust you as a result. You're scared you might lose your job because you're going to be late, but the cop confuses your fear and nervousness for guilt and decides to cuff you and interrogate you for a couple hours at the station. When you finally get to work and explain to your boss what happened, you can tell he's thinking that these are just bullshit excuses and that you got detained because you deserved it. A few weeks later, you're fired. That never happens to white people in this country. But black people live in fear of that happening everyday because it happens so often to people of color.

If you haven't done the sufficient work to have an inkling what it's like to be a person of color in this society, this exercise won't work. But imagine you're a black person, and go back and read your 4 consecutive posts. It's not that you don't have a point. It's that your point is one that only a white person would care about. It's a complaint made by someone who is wholly unaware of the privilege that he has. It doesn't even occur to us as a privilege. It's just a given. It's the way things should be and are (for us). What makes it a privilege is that it is ONLY that way for us, for white people.

I'm not okay with that. So when I see a blog like this, I have to speak out. Sorry.

@GaijinTony

""The early financial foundation of our society was built on slavery. Slavery was not only not abolished in our founding documents, but enshrined in them"

Wrong on both premises. If the rest of your diatribe relies on those two points to make its argument, it can be safely ignored. "

Well thank for taking the time not to read the rest of it. If you had, you'd know it wasn't a diatribe, but an honest, thoughtful answer to the question you asked. If you don't like the uncomfortable truths about our country in that answer, I don't blame you. They're aren't great, but they are true. You can look any of them up. That's our true history. Reject those facts if you must, but it won't change them. It will only mean that you remain unaware of our country's history. Facts are stubborn things. And so, apparently, is white privilege.

Best of luck to you, Tony.

"Yeah, right, whatever. We're such a terrible, racist society yet people of color come from all over the world to live here, even when they have to break the law to do it. Go figure..."

People will put up with a lot when they can't provide for their family. They come here to make a better living. Not to be treated equally. That says more about the exchange rate of the dollar than anything else, Tony.

I wouldn't (and don't) describe our society as terrible and racist. But it was built on that foundation and there are a lot of residual effects of it in our institutions today. There are a lot of racists still in this country. Some are in positions of power. The notions that black people are more violent, more dangerous exist for a lot of people still even if they don't hold any outward hatred towards them.

You can look up and verify every fact I mentioned in my answer if you care to. They are all easily found and well documented.
