It is highly doubtful that closing off flights from China had any meaningful impact. First, the explosion of cases in NYC was clearly linked to Europeans travelers, not Chinese. Second, the ban did not extend to Americans returning from China. They weren't tested or quarantined. Third, the ban did not stop Chinese citizens that arrived in the U.S. from countries other than China. Basically, a political stunt.
It is true that Klain said the Obama administration screwed up the response to H1N1 and the country was just fortunate that the outcome wasn't a lot worse. However, Klain later clarified his remark to say it only referred to screw ups with vaccine production. Fast forward to 2019. There was a group in the National Security Council (NSC) who's sole job was to deal with pandemic preparation and response. You would think that this group would have closely evaluated 2009 and figured out what when wrong and how to prepare for a future pandemic. What did Trump do? He disbanded the group and refused to listen to advice, even from Peter Navarro, who warned of a catastrophe. What do I think Clinton or Biden would have done in similar circumstances: not disband the pandemic group in the NSC and try not to screw up like they did in 2009. I know this is speculation but If all you do is tweet, play golf and constantly watch TV, thinking about how to deal with a pandemic is not high on your list. Let's not forget that Trump is a stable genius and one of the greatest Presidents in U.S history. Surely, he could have devised a plan to effectively deal with COVID-19, lol.
Trump and American Troops: Unless I missed something, there are still U.S. troops in Afganistan. American troops in Germany and South Korea are not engaged in any combat operations but they do provided stability in the region. The right was all over Obama for withdrawing troops from Iraq since it lead to the rise of ISIS. Even the troops that Trump has withdrawn, i.e. Syria, seemed to be more associated with appeasing Erdogan than protecting American troops. If Sanders or Warren were the nominee and espoused the same isolationist views as Trump the right would excoriate them. Finally, if the Russian bounty charge is true (and the Trump administration has covered this episode up) it is one of the worst betrayal of American troops in history.

At least in the 1980's the Republicans could make a claim (although a weak one) that they were the party of ideas while the Democrats were just tied to preserving a sclerotic order. Closing off of China was a great idea (and Trump's) and a big deal because it bought us time to deal with the oncoming pandemic. We should have closed them off more, though. Closing off of Europe came too late.
Trump squandered the time closing off China bought us by not mobilizing the nation to deal with the oncoming pandemic. For instance during this time, we should have built up a testing surveillance system to track the positivity rate of the virus when it hit us. But the problem wasn't only with Trump. I recall Fauci saying something like things were ok as is during February and not to be alarmed at the time. In retrospect, he was wrong.
Our response was pathetic, but failure came from multiple sources.

I think Biden would have been a lot more decisive than Trump. Trump seems to waver between doing what his medical advisors tell him and then echoing what his base wants from him. We'd have none of that from Biden. We'd have a clearer national policy on how to deal with the virus, which would go a long way.

Biden would have been a lot more decisive in the COVID fiasco
1. Building up a testing infrastructure
2. Having states follow and stick to his advisors plans for reopening. We wouldn't be having the cases, hospitalizations, and deaths we have now.
3. Getting appropriate resources to states when they need them and not wavering back and forth on this.
4. Touting benefits of mask wearing and making a national mandate
5. Saving tens of thousands of lives by ordering national stay at home significantly earlier.

It was Trump that claimed Biden made the statement about the ban. Another Trump lie. Now, Biden probably said that the "Muslim Ban" in early 2017 was racist and xenophobic. Most courts concurred that it was. Now, the Supreme Court is another story. As we learned in 2000, the biggest fiction is that the Supreme Court is apolitical. Trump has stated that he solely pushed ahead with the China travel ban against the advice of the CDC and everyone else in his administration. Total garbage. A travel ban is standard operating procedure that any epidemiologist with a brain would advocate for.

Fauci is a science nerd with good administrative skills. Not a combination that is usually part of science nerd DNA. I went to a couple of lectures he gave eons ago at NIH and he knew his stuff. Not a ground breaking scientist but a really bright competent guy who is an excellent communicator.
Fauci and China Travel Ban
I thought Fauci fully supported the China Travel ban. Do you have any evidence to the contrary? In fact, the government health scientists were strongly encouraging Trump to go forward with the ban.
Fauci and Masks
Fauci claims, and I have no reason to doubt him, that he was opposed to the general public wearing masks because that would dry up the supply for health care workers. Seems reasonable to me since one of my employees bought about 1,000 N95 masks off of Amazon. When data and empirical evidence from Taiwan and South Korea clearly showed that masks reduce transmission of the virus, Fauci became a strong advocate. What is wrong with that?
Pelosi and Di-Blasio
The difference between them and Trump is that they did not have the massive federal science bureaucracy (CDC, NIH) and the intelligence agencies telling them what was really going on in the early days. You have to be incredibly naive to believe that the intelligence services did not know what was happening in Wuhan.
Protest Marchers
At least many of them wore masks unlikel the Trump rallies and Sturgis. In addition, they believe police behavior is an existential issue. I'm sure you don't agree with them but its much different than the partying in Sturgis or the ridiculous Trump rallies in OK and AZ.

Most likely, Fauci was pressured early on to support the GOP party line that C-19 was not a big deal.
It was a time of uncertainty, and there was no point in panicking just yet. However, in the weeks and months that followed, Fauci advocated stricter measures while Trump and the GOP remained in willful ignorance.
Those critical weeks in February and March are what directly led to the current situation.
Don't believe me, fine. But that is how the history books will be written when all is said and done.

Fauci said in several interviews interviews that covid was not a big deal and nothing to worry about. I dont completely fault him on that. The NYT, Washington post, de blasio, cuomo, pelosi in Chinatown SF in late February?, and many other publications and talking heads on cable said the same thing. Cuomo and deblasio did so on march 2nd. 1 month later he publicly acknowledged that he underestimate this virus. And proceeded to blame Trump for everything, even nursing homes. This virus crap got partisan quick because no one got it right. Biden wouldn't have made a difference cuz he was in a coma at the time.

getting supplies from china for ppe was being held up...they have some nice articles about how china was trying to buy up all the ppe so they could have it for themselves or sell it for profit...the few about their dealings with Italy were pretty bad
there are some positives with a few realizations about china and russia...we won't be in this position again....we will be ready for the next more deadly virus that comes...the federal and state ppe reserves will be filled to the brim...unlike how it was for this virus.

I don't know if Fauci is deep state but Id say that anyone who has had the position he has had is very politically connected and too ensconced for anyone even with cause to oust them. It is unbelievable to me that throughout all the years he has been at the helm that NO ONE was better or more qualified to do his job.
If he as someone else put it just a communicator then someone should teach him how to do so consistently, Or keep his mouth shut until he is sure about things. His off the cuff remarks are inconsistent with the pointed questions he answers setting up a conflicting narrative that I don't believe he wishes to present but does.
