Breaking news: The Trump administration FDA just jumped the gun before there was enough evidence to give convalescent plasma emergency use for COVID 19.
It is not been proven to be a "breakthrough" treatment for COVID-19. That is propaganda. No rigorous study has showed this is the case.
I still recommend asking for it if you are sick with COVID-19 in the hospital, but realize it may not be the panacea Trump claims it is in his announcement today.
Problem is by this measure by Trump, it’s going to be harder to do the rigorous studies necessary to show that convalescent plasma works. Admittedly, they've been taking too long to do, but you can't rush good science.
I hope convalescent plasma doesn't become the new hydroxychloroquine.

Rumor is the real reason Trump authorized the emergency use authorization (EUA) for convalescent plasma is to lower the bar for use of EUAs in general so he can eventually use a EUA for vaccines before the November election.
He’s going to try to win the election with vaccines.
That's the rumor anyway. From scientists, not politicians.

No NR, vaccines are different than convalescent plasma. There might be 40-50,000 of sick or very sick patients who would receive convalescent plasma, probably much less. The coronavirus vaccine would be given to 250+ million, healthy individuals. So, the safety concern are orders of magnitude greater. If Trump forced approval of a coronavirus vaccine, without the consent of the FDA group that is responsible for vaccine approval, 90% of them would resign. Almost all the vaccine guys at FDA are MD's so they could easily find a job that pays a lot more. Suburban parents would be in an uproar.
Since this blog has been hijacked I also want to respond to the clown that intimated Fauci was part of the deep state since he has been on the job so long. Nobody has replaced Fauci since NIH can't find anyone to take the job. You are an elite physician with solid administrative skills, a rare combo that would command a salary of at least 750K as medical school dean and even more at a big Pharma company or the Mayo clinic. Fauci makes 340K a year. Over a 10-15 year period, that is a lot of money to forfeit.

While the issue of scale may make the FDA more hesitant to cut back as much on rigorous phase 3 vaccine experiments as they did on RCTs for convalescent plasma use, this still doesn't rule out them cutting back some, particularly with pressure from the White House.

The question is how much to still have the FDA willing to sign on and to have the vaccines out before the election.

Speech on the lawn of the White House tonight. No one is social distancing, and very few are wearing masks. Two things.
1. Potential for super spreading event. Let's hope that doesn't happen.
2. Way to influence the public to social distance and wear masks during prime time TV, Trump! People will see this and say, "Why do I need to wear a mask or social distance? Look at Trump."
Between both of these, we can ask how many more cases will this single event cause? How many more hospitalizations? How many more deaths?
