and worrying about big blue boxes in shopping centers and street corners.....when the postal worker picks up the mail at your home, apartment, condo.
Didn't a post master general try to take over the phones during a world war? Like WW1 or something.
^ not sure about phones but the FCC states that by law the military can either apprehend or purposefully use privately owned amateur radio stations.
Hams actually coordinate and practice communications during disasters.
And yeah... Ham operators could probably deliver the election results even if a nationwide power outage happens.
Fuck the post office. They're only around because of union protection. They suck that bad.
The Postmaster looked like a completely incompetent fool yesterday.
How does the post office head not know the cost of mailing a postcard?
Dude should probably get on a plan for delivering ballots for November's elections too.
The point is the US Mail system could be rationalized to operate in the 21st century and not lose a boatload of money every year and you'll still receive your Dear John letter when your unwoke SO decides she hates your Progressive guts.
The US Postal system has LOST 77 BILLION dollars over the last 13 years.
God forbid a logistics expert come in and make changes.
What a stupid idea.
You conveniently omitted the main reason the USPS lost all that money. In 2006, Congress, in their infinite wisdom, required the USPS to prefund all their health costs for the next 75 years over a 10-year period. No private U.S. corporation would ever undertake such an absurd prefunding scheme. So, the answer isn't hiring a logistics expert because USPS probably can't be made profitable. So, if you don't want to subsidize the USPS just turn everything over to Fedex and USP. GBD wants to move mail service into the 21st Century, then privatize mail delivery.
^I agree, as long as the post office can do the job for the elections with those changes.
That was for KS.
USPS doesn't need to be profitable. It just needs to bleed out money less.
Really Quat... so... other than Pre-funding their pension.... USPS is a money maker?
The USPS put over 8.8 billion in their pension plan in 2019?
GTFOHWTBS.
That is not why the USPS loses money.
As Bugs would say, “Ha Ha Ha... What a maroon!”
NR is right. Why does the post office have to make a profit?
No I didn't Squat, I mentioned the prefunding of pension obligations policy enacted by GWB Jr in another blog but USPS was losing money long before that happened.
" GBD wants to move mail service into the 21st Century, then privatize mail delivery."
I'm quite certain I never said that anywhere in any blog but why not consider it? Everything should be on the table rather than this attitude of "this is the way we've always done it".
1957, he tried to stop Saturday delivery. 2020, here we are faced with the same option. Tell me what would be wrong with you not getting your junk mail on Saturday?
The problem with ballot delivery is NOT the USPS. it's the ridiculous rules set forth by the parties that run the nominations and election machinery. These local yokels need to give USPS more time to get the job done.
As far as 2 Democrats in NY accusing each other of voter suppression and vote rigging, I got nothing!
@GBD, the only comment directed at you was the crack about Jeopardy so don't get so defensive. btw, you said we should have a 21st Century mail delivery system and my response was" then privatize it".
USPS doesn't need to make a profit but how about just breakeven?
There's no reason not to find ways to run government functions efficiently, we ALL pay for them.
The military should be included as well
An expensive poorly run government drains the body politic of hard earned funds AND is considered unfair and immoral by many.
The DMV is a standing joke.
The VA is a sad joke.
City and county over-regulation is rampant and invites more unscrupulous behavior to bend the rules, possibly
Nobody has ever given 1 fuck about USPS other than when they fuck up.
We all know it loses a lot of money and other then packages is antiquated.
So many fewer people use mail other than companies delivering shit we order and soon nobody will know how to write, so need to run it like UPS and be a delivery service to accomodate the tech now/future.
Actually, Amazon has made use of USPS to complete many deliveries due to the requirements they live under. Had an interesting discussion with my mail carrier who was delivering packages on Sunday in his USPS truck.
That is good - that is eventually all they will be which is not a bad thing just the best business and longevity decision.
No to $25 Billion - if there is a ton of mail in voting then halt the junk mail and suspend regular mail for a day or two (except meds).
Fucking politicians.
"As I said, if you have an issue with the USPS then abolish them and turn everything over to Fedex and USP. Amazon will then buy both Fedex and USP and we will have the most efficient mail system in the world by far. You have an issue with that moron?"
And the screaming will be heard far and wide from every tiny marginal post office, you moron.
Think about the irony of the small flyover state voter for Trump who wants government out of his life, then screams when you close his subsidized local USPS branch.
I agree with NR, Doofey and GBD... the USPS doesn’t have to be “profitable.” I never said that.... but in the red BILLIONS of dollars EVERY year?
Amazon did the same thing for several years.. but with a plan towards profitability. The Post office obviously has had no plan to reduce losses since they have been INCREASING the red by almost aN additional BILLION dollars a year.
Up to 8.9 in 2019. Really? There are defenders of that?
he talked about a few changes( low hanging fruit) that could get it down into the 3billion range
those did not include raising prices yet for packages...doing that could get you closer to the break-even range, which would be pretty fucking good
