The title of this blog says it all. People are protesting against police brutality in this country.
A lot of taxpayer funds (billions/millions) go towards policing and overtime pay. Yet police warn that streets will be less safe if funds are cut, these same police often get overtime pay to sit around and do nothing. Police are very well funded, the threat to safety if cuts are made is a scare tactic by their unions to protect their pockets. Also, police officers aren't footing the bill for their misconduct, it's the taxpayers that pay for reckless policing.
Folks must also realize that the police will rush to save you when you call 911. They are willing to put their lives on the line to save your ass. At least that's the message they want to portray. Police also see horrific things that you can't even imagine and have to deal with difficult people on a regular basis.
Police also create problems when their wasn't one to begin with. How many people have lost their lives, or been shot/beaten/harassed because the police decided to mess with someone over a petty matter that might not have even been illegal, or was just a misdemeanor.
There are too many factors in this discussion but one should not be blind to the other side's arguments. It's obvious there needs to be more oversight to weed out bad officers. We don't want to support Gestapo in our country.
There really are legitimate arguments on both sides of this. I disagree with the implication that the police are or could be the “Gestapo” on any level.
Portraying police as evil is wrong. Are there bad cops? Absolutely. Are there bad policing policies? Yes. Are police a necessary part of society? Yes. As long as there are selfish people... we will need police.
Do we need police reform? Yes. Better Training? Always.
But... this is such an emotional issue... it’s tough to have a reasonable discussion.
Jesse Ventura has a better perspective, imo. Listen to the account of his black friend, a gospel artist who holds a PhD, and the steps the man goes through to avoid brutality from the police.
She didn't deserve to die and that sucks she got shot, your story isnn't straqight:
Breoona T was not spleeping, her body was in the hallway and her boyfriend shot at the front door. Thats why fire was returned.
"Courier Journal"
I say, when stoped by police do exactly what they say (record everything) then when all is over go see a lawyer. If anything was done wrong the lawyer will sue.
Chris Rock gave common sense advice.
One of the best ways to get shot and possibly killed is
by ignoring an officer's command.
Complaints by Blacks are occurring in some Dem states and cities
that have not addressed these problems for decades.
Also Blacks seem to continue to ignore that fact that
most crimes against Blacks are by other Blacks.
BLM totally ignores the Black on Black crime that
has occurred in Chicago for decades.
I don't think the BLM movement will change very much.
Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have been around forever
and what have the accomplished?
Well they became multimillionaires trying to end discrimination.
And here we are 50 years later, with rioting, looting and killing
continuing.
Apparently things are better in So Cal. We don't hear about
police brutality as much as in other places in this country.
Pretty soon they’ll have real robocops that don’t know what u look like so there’ll be no judgment and will only act accordingly to our actions lol I have a big imagination
Black on black crime? That’s just crime, dude. We don’t discuss white on white, or Asian on Asian crime cause we call it the same thing. Black lives matter isn’t just about police brutality, it’s about the entire institution of racism against blacks in America. Police brutality just represents one aspect of that and is a prime example. With that said, the idea of defunding the police is entirely ridiculous. You can go and defund the Irvine police station, but I do not need anarchy and lawlessness going on in Santa Ana.
Yes Julius I know that that’s why I said real Robocop’s not the movie kind and me being that I have a big imagination was another way of telling myself to keep dreaming because yes they probably never gonna do that but wouldn’t that be nice if they did is all I’m saying
Defunding the police does not mean anarchy or lawlessness. It means a redistribution of taxpayer funds away from police departments (as they are generally corrupt and/or useless in actual crime prevention or solving, see below) into things that actually *prevent* crime - drug treatment, mental health care, homelessness solutions, conflict resolution, etc.
Police are relatively useless at actually solving crimes:

Police themselves are responsible for tons of crime (including robbery, rape, murder) of course:

I could go on all night
Defunding the police also means breaking the stranglehold that police unions have on municipal funds and their total lack of accountability. It means the end of qualified immunity. It means no more kids in cages or family separations. No more cash bail or private prisons. No more jail time for minor drug offenses.
The police in the United States are a rogue criminal enterprise born out of the slave patrols of yore. They have no legitimacy or place in our society - they are only there to protect certain property and certain people (and suppress, violently if needed, other people) - this is not by accident or "bad apples" - this is how the system was designed to be implemented.
Defunding the police before you can make a dent in fixing the underlying causes of crime seems like a really bad idea and a recipe for crime to thrive. It’s better to work on better training, including sensitivity and racial bias training. And that will take funding.
