I can think of a couple of times I got bad advice.

In 1973 I was working at an aerospace company doing spot welding earning $3.40 an hour. I got called at the Postal Service, I would start at $5.40 an hour. When I gave my two week notice to the foreman explained that I should leave that job for a man with a family. Three months after I quit they laid off the entire crew that was hired in with me.

Mid 70s I went to my cousin for advice about buying a house. She owned several apartment buildings in the Jungle and several houses in the Wilshire District so I figured who better to ask since prices are going up so fast do you think they will come down and should I wait? She told me to wait prices will come down in a few years I finally gave up waiting and bought my first home in 1980.

I remember this young Asian lady who worked in the cafeteria at my job. One day I see her sitting at a table crying. I asked if she was OK and she explained that six months ago she had an opportunity for a better job so she gave notice and the owner told her that she was like family and they wanted her to stay. Six months later they sold the business and the new owner fired her.

a while back...if you were in business and wanted a car over 30k, it made sense to lease it first to get the best write off, then buy it after the lease was up if you really wanted it. most of the time...it was probably the good decision to dump the car

the way around that was the SUV/truck rated 6000 pds and above...that was the spike of big SUVs in America...lotta Christmas presents that came with a 25k deduction

When I was told getting married was a great idea.
I wish someone would have said it is best to rent.

I would have a few houses, planes, boats, motorcycles and such.

What is an ex going to do with a p210 and R1's?

Life sucks and then you get a president that needs to write his name backwards on his forehead so he remembers who he is in the morning. I hope somebody reminds him to look in the mirror?

Worst advice. “ask the Boss, he’s experienced.”

Big issue with a project and the client is pissed.
The correct answer was to make the expensive adjustments. But we needed the boss’ blessing to spend the money.
He disagreed. Client found out we weren’t fixing issue. Gave a bad review on an industry review site and we lost several other clients. 10 times the value of the fix.
Of course someone had to be terminated for the fuck up.

I fell into IT a while back, started out with owning my own computer repair store in Fountain Valley.

Now I have a CCIE and make a good living with small/medium sized business consulting.

The metric of measuring "being educated" by having a college degree has been rendered obsolete now.

^^^ Yeah man.. The CCIE from what I recall is quite illusive , in that, it's a VERY difficult exam to PASS.

I think there are only a small number of CCIEs in the world. The interesting thing about it, you cant get that kinda training/ hands-on in a 4 year college.

It was very tough and took me a few tries.

One component is written, but the primary component is in special lab you have to travel to. You have a couple of hours to solve the network failure that they created. This is the part that I kept failing at.

I never worked for something so hard in my life, but the day I got it was the day I was finally able to defeat the "impostor syndrome" that alot of folks in IT have.

True that in today's market it does not hold the gold level of value it did 10 years ago, but, if I ever wanted to go back into being a W2. I could basically walk onto any IT department I wanted. (mostly)

Cisco is having a bit of an identity crisis lately and I know some shops are choosing to opt out of their shitty licensing. TAC is even suffering some of these issues as well.

I prepped by buying a full Cisco stack for a home lab I built. All used stuff from ebay, but still no small cost. All told, between the multiple tries at the exam and the gear, I probably spent north of $25k.

But, the returns were very tangible and more than paid for all that.

I was working a shitty help desk job at a big restaurant chain back then and the biggest investment of all was time. I worked that lab 6 hours a night, every night I came home from work and most all day on the weekends for 2 years to prep for it.

It was grueling and there were many times I almost quit.

I still have all that stuff, its been turned off for quite some time but if anyone cares to know more I can give specs. (its all really old stuff now tho)

everyone is using network simulators now.. software like GNS3 instead of building a lab.

My god! I wish this was an option when I was training for it. Even something like ITPRO.TV with their virtual labs would have been a godsend. It would have enabled me to train while at work on my downtime instead of having to be in the garage.

And the new stuff dosent even require that you have switches or routers on prem at all anymore.

(although, any shop I run will still have the physical components, pry my router from my cold dead hands!)

2 things come to mind.

1. "Dont pull out, I want to feel you cum in me."
"OK sounds good to me!"
30 years later.... figure it out.

2. When the iphone first came out and was they were having issues:
"Don't buy Apple stock, they probably wont be making anyone rich."

i had a friend who worked at ericsson, one of the first mobil phone manufacturers, they were in all kinds of IT. i asked him his professional perspective on the www and he said - its never going anywhere, you simply cannot get so many bytes of data through a residential phone line...
this was in the mid/early 80s. i kinda blew the entire www off telling myself it aint nothing.

great advice i never followed:
on an international flight, sat next to a guy who was working for ATT I think it was - he said "WIRE-LESS" its gonna explode (this was in 1990).
It was like the PLASTIC moment in the Graduate.
but i never did follow that advice, in 1990 the most advanced wireless apparatus most people had was a home phone with the antenna..i simply didnt have the imagination to see how much stuff could become wireless.

Listening to my Dad about a business opportunity... Contribute an escrow deposit to a can't miss transaction... we were buying land in Newhall that a developer needed to tie his project together. Dad told me he knew this guy, he was a lawyer, was the real deal. So I gave him $20,000 and fuckall if this theiving mutherfucker did not disappear with my money. 1981. You know how hard it was to save up $20,000 in 1981. Jim Bramble.... i got him disbarred... that cost more money. Dad was not a good judge of character.

This is either the worst advice I ignored or the best advice I didnt act on... dont know which.

The night before I was married to the only woman I've ever lived with and still married to...

My soon to be brother in law looks at me in the eye at the end of the rehearsal dinner, in front of everyone, and says... "dude, dont do it!".

I just said... "where's desert?"
