Apples and oranges. Very simple.
Population density of UK = 275 per square kilometer. Over 400 at max.
Population density of Sweden = 25 per square kilometer.
Population density is highly predictive (among other things) of transmission.
That’s why UK will have a much tougher time than Sweden at preventing transmission. Period.

This isn’t nuclear physics.

But you could compare the Nordic countries amongst each other whether the Swedes did the right thing
Of course, we still don’t know where this is headed but at this moment, it seems that the Swedes made a huge mistake
Norway currently has around 14,500 cases and the Finns 10,500
In contrast Sweden has 94,200
Deaths: Norway 275 Finland 346
And Swedes: 5895 deaths
It’s possible criminal charges may be filed. In EU accidents (like plane crashes) or events like these (including heatwave deaths that occurred some years ago) are prosecuted.

you know Japan never locked down either and wonders, why America lockdown there economy over the chinese flu.
126 million ppl there in a country roughly the size of California
but the media just ignores Japan, in this regard
|
|
oh by the way
Japan has had: 85,739 cases of covid
covid deaths :1599
covid recovery:78,609 recovered
|

got lucky it wasn't more lethal
some people have been able to adapt very well...that dude from amazon has done decently in this thing also
|

they made a decision that affected the nursing/retirement homes...how many deaths were part of that decision they admit they fucked up on
I'm sure lots of deaths in that demographic were going to die regardless...BUT what would their numbers be without that fateful decision? are we in the hundreds VS thousands? is that info somewhere?
how would they fare with the other Nordic countries in total and now?
I've seen a few news videos...they look like they are doing great

I agree with Spongy (minus the rhetoric). The biggest difference with the US and the rest of the industrialized world is our rebellious nature. Our desire and “right” to self determination causes many of us to ignore the best interests of others and think only of ourselves. So... we break or bend rules and laws as it suits us (and we can handle the penalty).
Parts of China beat back COVID because citizens had no choice. They were arresting people that violated the lockdown. They literally had Government agents (police and military) roving the streets looking for people violating the lockdown.
There are dozens of reasons for our response. The biggest of which is our selfishness, but when you add to that the lack of real information that was available at the beginning, our cancel culture media that discounts and demonizes anyone you disagree with, legitimate distrust of the government along with super-escalated distrust based on historical patterns, we have a big problem. Then you add on top of that agenda/opinion driven news (Fox, CNN, MSNBC, Drudge, Politico, etc...) We are fucked. Most people work for a living. They have families, commutes, chores and responsibilities that keep them from sorting out facts and fiction, truth and error. Propaganda and honest, collaborative problem solving. Not to mention having the energy and desire to watch/read multiple sources.
Living in a free society is hard. There must be a level of personal judgement and responsibility, but our ability to find, judge and accept truth has been compromised. In the last 50 years we have learned how unjust and manipulative our government has been for 250 years. Slavery, Native Americans, international espionage, military industrial complex, big business, the poor, the working poor, middle class, rich, super-rich all rightfully distrust each other.
Our image of America being a bright and shiny “city on a hill” has been damaged (if not destroyed). There are thousands (probably thousands) of examples where self interest, dishonesty and corruption were behind decision making that sections of our society think to unfair or flat out wrong.
I’m not talking about Trump. He is merely the evidence of how far we have fallen. His cries of “fake” or biased reporting are true. The problem is he only calls out one side. Both sides have ridiculously effective propaganda machines.
The reality is we are racing towards an unavoidable breakdown of what has been societal norms. However November turns out... for 150 years, we have trusted our electoral process... it will be questioned in November. And it will get worse no matter who wins. Because it is not about supporting/upholding our systems anymore. Its about winning.
Coronavirus 2019 just further exposed huge cracks in America’s facade.

Lol, on a planet of 7.5 billion, a couple million is a rounding error
shit happens in the biological world and it's certainly more complicated than some idiots on this site think

none of us will be alive when the pandemic hits

everyone ignores Japan

Japan is doing well. They had a wave in August that is coming down. Testing, tracing, quarantining, mask-wearing, and social distancing really help.
They have a huge population density. They fit 1/2.5 of the population of US into the state of California but have more than two orders of magnitude fewer deaths.
|
|
They also have a civic sense and duty; which makes a huge difference.
( despite their perverse sexual deviances lol)
They didn’t make mask wearing political

It is ironic that the right now wants to hold up Sweden as a model. These are the same folks that practice socialism that Trump is supposedly going to save us from. Of course, the implicit argument is that Trump was going to follow the Swedish herd immunity model until he got derailed by the Dems and the scientists. And, of course, we would all be better off today.
The answer to Sweden is Taiwan. They got COVID-19 correct from the start. They learned the lessons from SARS in 2003. Very few deaths. No closing of the economy, schools, etc. Just need to wear masks and socially distance and avoid indoor gatherings. Very minor infringements on civil liberties. It has nothing to do with a rebelliousness nature of Americans. We all coalesced after 911 and sacrificed a lot of civil liberties with the Patriot Act. I gotta believe that we spent 100x the amount the Taiwanese did on preparing for a pandemic. The problem was execution by a totally incompetent federal government led by Trump. And, don't say Taiwan is different because it is an island. The UK is an island. The Taiwanese had many more visitors from China in December and January than the U.S. had. They just didn't have a leader spouting falsehoods, downplaying the seriousness and spouting lies from the beginning.

A virus with a 2.8% case fatality rate got y'all acting like it's the 2nd coming of the black plague. We just saw a terribly out of shape 74 year old man who eats garbage survive the Chinese virus. I'm guessing most of you are overweight too since you're deathly afraid of kung flu. Bros Fauci and Birx told us from the start that this would kill 100k to 250k or so WITH mitigation and over 2 million without. Idk why y'all surprised. Your hero Fauci told us how bad it would be

"A virus with a 2.8% case fatality rate got y'all acting like it's the 2nd coming of the black plague"
It's a lot like roulette. You don't know how the virus is going to affect you. That's the scary part.

^ Says our reverse barometer, lol
Wrong again on the Orange clown getting out of hospital, weren't you?....
Mr. Facts are facts
You've been wrong more often than there are Covid cases
Besides which, stop being a fucking snowflake
Geez, walking out the house is Russian roulette every day
You have a far higher chance of being injured in your car than you do from Covid

We do agree on the Swedish bikini team though

^nope about being injured in a car.

"Wrong again on the Orange clown getting out of hospital, weren't you?...."
Many doctors think he shouldn't have been released. It is just Trump being a desperate showman.

I wonder if anyone was thrown off their healthcare in Sweden or Japan during this pandemic.
Or is that just an American thing to do?
|
|
I didn't know people "weren't" getting treatment for COVID
|

There actually was a plan to deal with a pandemic whether as a result of a natural occurrence or as part of a deliberate attack. I haven't seen anything about it in the mainstream media but I suspect in part they would never want to give Bush and Cheney credit for having done anything right. It was last updated in 2017.
Some of the blame for how things were handled resides with Trump, some with the CDC and some with the state governors. I am sure they could have all accessed the information but nobody had the will to follow through with it.

Yep. Enough blame for everyone... but it’s an election year...

thread not meant to hold Sweden up as the great panacea(goal is to see what's different)...they have some good reporting going on now....full restaurants, mass transits going(no masks in the videos though)....seemingly, low rate of infection when the rest of Europe is spiking. everyone is looking for positives...they also did not do nothing - they wore masks, distanced and so forth when this thing hit.
BUT, they are open for business now and WE have cities that can't open their restaurants, to the point of them being lost forever. please revisit these threads when the election is over...let's see if they reopen at that point...like magically right before the 10th (give a week for appearances)
America did the lockdowns, followed the main scientists...flattened the curve...what was the reason again? did it help?
lots of good comments about Taiwan. 521 cases 7 deaths. I know they were on top of it...they were trying to alert the WHO and were being "ignored and suppressed" at the direction of china Their numbers ARE soo good, we might need to "drill down" on how that was possible...with all that travel back and forth to china in those early months.
they have half the death rate/cases as the US...maybe our fat and unhealthy population doubles our rate or we didn't know how to handle the infected people?
he new therapeutics should be driving the deaths down from this point...worked for fat boy trump -. maybe this can help us open up
in our community...people wear masks, but out doing activities as safe as possible
