^ p.s. and share with insurance companies... (true)
don't mess with this...when you never have any issues, it's great and a lil cheaper
get in a big wreck? they will do whatever they can to come up with reasons to get out of it...looking at miles could be one of those things...very easy to see oil changes and interval of replaced tires to back into the truer range of miles
what im saying is that i have 10k miles on my car in 8 months, and i dont think im suppose to drive that much!! and im running from the insurance police!!!!
So I bought royal purple oil and a filter to go to the mechanic today! lol and not the dealer!!!
hahahahahahhaah
(evil victory laugh)
hahahhahahahaha

At some point your insurance company will ask you to update your mileage. I recommend that you give them the exact odometer reading otherwise you might get a canceled letter in the mail. Then when you go to a new ins co your rates will be 3 times higher for 3 years. Not worth it.
Not just dealers... pretty sure oil change places and tire places etc. read your odo and insurance gets it
I recently unexpectedly saw my insurance rates drop. I called my agent and he said it's because of low mileage. Asked how they know that and he said if I got an oil change recently they report mileage to insurance.
Seems a little creepy... plus I'd been asking for a discount for years since I told them I put few miles on that car but insurance wouldn't believe me.
i think all insurance companies sent checks to people for mileage adj....due to covid lock downs
typically each year you renew...they ask you about the miles
you can also call them if you are blowing past it by 50 percent
probably safe if stay within 25percent...job changes and things happen in any given year....many people go in the other direction also...so these things even out for them
Ahhh, side gig; when OP isn't scamming the government out of checks, she is scamming insurance companies with purple oil and mileage falsifications
State Harm at least never asks about miles now.
They told me that was inaccurate so now they get an odometer report every time you get an oil change or service.
Easy to imagine Jiffy Lube and Sears Auto etc. selling your miles info to insurance to make a few extra bucks.
Facebook does it- makes money on your info so everyone is joining.
Gotta wonder what else they might report. Car clean? Max speed you drove (it's in car computer). Miles since last oil change?
For all we know insurance may be collecting info and building a whole driver profile on all of us. And maybe selling that... to auto dealers? Credit agencies?
Because auto nsurance is mandated but don't think there is ANY privacy protection like with medical.
So a "free" tire rotation or check up is now a money making opportunity for a mechanic shop or dealer ... they get to sell your odometer datam
I imagine there is a company making big $$$ by matching car VINs in a database with miles reports from mechanics with insurance. Maybe auto lease companies too...
Always read the fine print on your agreements before looking for loopholes. Somethings will sneak up on you and bit you in your ass.
Seems there should be a way to opt out of this.
There really is no reason the shop or dealer needs to read the odometer and download all your data just to change oil or rotate tires.
Small shops report your mileage, too.
If they use a standard software package to write up service and do billing, the info is frequently sent to carfax.
Changing your own oil could void your auto warranty with the dealer/ manufacturer. That could cost a lot more than a few $$ in insurance premiums.
Fyi I am not scamming anyone!!! I rightfully qualify for EDD
It asked me questions about my employer
and school schedule!
It pays to be liberally fiscal!
bwana good fucking point lol
I will take the car there when it rightfully should have 10k on it.. like in a couple months..
it will balance out
im just saying!!!
a owner of a car dealer told me this....
take it or leave it!
btw yes i have my first new car ever!
@bwana Changing oil or performing your own service will NEVER void your warranty unless they can prove that it was performed improperly.
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0138-auto-warranties-routine-maintenance
The way they can get you is if you don't keep receipts or your own service record to prove that the service was done.

As someone who had to pay IN FULL for a totaled out vehicle (a brand new totaled out vehicle that I hadn’t paid one dollar towards yet) due to an insurance error on my part, I would strongly advise you not fuck around with auto insurance.
And make sure you have a gap policy on that new car of yours.

back in the 70's and 80's we had a big garage/driveway --.dug our own grease pit with concrete and fucking heavy covers for it
we had to learn simple shit like oil changes, tire changes/rotations. simple tune-ups...all brefore we could drive and get a car
every few months we had oil changing parties with all the parents and new drivers...went on for about 7- 8 years, as all the new drivers were coming up, and until they went to college
when we all hit college...we learned about JIFFY LUBE...WTF were we doing all that time ?????
just kidding it was a fun time with everyone...I could do it, but never really had a liking of it...it allowed us all to get cars and drive...that's what we cared about.
NEVER done it since then...got new drivers coming up...lil fuckers can't even wash dishes or pick up dog shit

Data mining your car and ratting out to the insurance co reminds me of when Radio Shack would ask you for your address, phone number, etc just to buy a pack of batteries.
Fucking insurance is such a scam. The one thing we HAVE to pay for that, if needed, they do everything they can to weasel out of helping you.

When I give my insurance company the mileage on my Suzuki they probably don't believe me. It's 15 years old with a total of 4000 miles, that averages 266 miles a year.
that a car or bike?
Just have a tow truck drive you around. Get zero miles and you don't actually have to drive. Who needs self driving cars...or gas! Oil changes? I laugh at your oil changes! Buy new tires? Heck no!
also once you paid the 50 bucks a year to AAA for their emergency tow truck service...it was all over
been doing that for like 35 years...not sure what it costs nowadays, but easily use it once every few years for battery dying or tire going flat
think we get that same deal...makes all that fucking shit we did getting to the point of a car and driving worthless
innovation is great...I'm all for paying people to do shit...get dumber with each passing day...wife hates it...she has become the handyman in the family...fixing shit and putting things together...all I have to do is just rip out a few big bills and put them on the table, saying let's get a guy! she takes the money and does it herself...I'm off to the poker table or multi hr massage 5-6 days a week
tried using that method for other things over the 30 years with her and it never took. easily could have saved a few hundred K

Gina:
Pro and cons with older vehicles,
Older. Can get an instrument cluster or two off of eBay. Keep the miles at whatever u want. Some can be swapped in 10 to 20 minutes if one doesnt mind doing that.
Not sure on newer or semi newer where the mileage is held, ecu ?
there is a time value utility of it all...the amount of extra cost for the appropriate miles is just not that much...there is that GAME factor in it to see what you can get away with, but the real issue happens when an accident occurs and they get out of paying it...maybe putting you in BK
same with fucking gas...I tell my wife all the time...she wants to save that 10cents a gallon or whatever the fuck it is and drive to costco (6 miles away)...with huge line and lots of idling. WTF?? the gas alone making that trip negates most of the savings...add to that the 30min it takes?
I'm pretty sure she just wants to get the fuck away from the house and family for bit...no rational person could do that for money alone...been going on for 30 yrs though

I never received insurance check in NC so the oil change count must be sent to insurance companies. I have put on 40k miles on my Honda since my job requires travel daily by my appointments and thd companies I contract with send my uo to 60 miles each way on my 5 to 7 appointments per day. I love being an independent contractor though. I forget to log in each trip sometimes as always rushing place to place. My mileage journal will have to come off off Google maps when its time for audut on the missing journal pgs.

I do my own oil changes every 3000 miles. Drain and fill transmission once a year, Harley engine oil every 2500 miles and the Suzuki engine oil every two year. I haven't had my 19 year old SUV serviced at a dealer since the warranty expired so no records. Hopefully the insurance companies will take my word about the mileage.
I think the frequent oil changes keeps the engine fresh. When new my SUV got 25 mpg, now 19 years later with 180,000 miles I still get 25 mpg and it doesn't use any oil between oil changes.
