Trump would be an idiot to try to pardon himself. He may get away w pardoning his family members because Clinton pardoned his brother or brother-in-law.
Pardoning himself puts Trump at the mercy of the court and is still exposure in terms of his self-pardon being rejected as we re a nation not of monarchy (no one above the law). If the Supreme Court lets a presidential self-pardon, imagine the terrible precedent it’d set and it’d allow future presidents to rule and break laws with impunity because he/she could alway pardon him/herself at end of term. His best bet would be to work out a deal w Pence or Biden to pardon him.
I think if he leverage the mayhem he’s causing into “a peaceful transition” for a pardon from Biden for federal crimes, I bet the State of NY will probably suspend its charges against Trump for state crimes. I don’t think many people would think charging and locking up a former president would be a good thing.
What is odd is all the talk about Russia willing to offer Trump asylum if he’s prosecuted by US? Makes me wonder if once Trump is out of office and no one is beholden to him anymore, if we uncover some deeply shady shit he’s done on behalf of foreign powers or that his past undisclosed financial entanglements made him susceptible to foreign influence while as president.
