i guess it would have been totally surprising to hear her care about her officers more...leave the statehood thing out of the conversation for a few weeks at least...THEY are never one to waste time or opportunity...unfortunately, they got a big ugly one here

Maybe it’s relevant because the US President controls the Washington DC National Guard.

she didn't want them for the blm protest/riots...where they were actually burning shit down...historic places...funny how that works.
trump protests have never risen to this level before, but they were ill prepared

From Charlottesville to Washington DC.
Why no real security when law enforcement was alerted to their plans. ? A strong police presence at the location and doors of the capitol would have saved that womans life. The FBI had already alerted that right wing terrorists were the main domestic threats.

@Granite -
For the same reason that the Palestinians on the West Bank do not want to be incorporated into Jordan.
On a more serious note, it has been discussed and you also need to include Virginia. The short answer is that neither the state of Maryland or Virginia wants DC as part of the state. Partially politics - although both states are blue, Maryland does elect Republicans to state office from time-to time and Virginia does have a relatively strong Republican party although they haven't fared well in state wide elections in recent times. Incorporating DC would make either state the bluest of the blue. The other obstacle is rural parts of both states are strongly opposed to incorporating a major city which they believe will lead to major tax increases. Note that marginal tax rate in DC (>$20K) is 9.5%.

Not only that ... but DC was intentionally left as an independent district so as to not create a capitol state.

You do realize it is private business and the President sent troops in when BLM protested.
When the President had his rally go down to the capital and attempt a coup and kept the troops out...they invaded the capital building and Trump let them after encouraging them....you think that mayor doesnt have an argument?

The Dems want DC to be a state to add two more Dems to the Senate. The Repubs would be unlikely ever to control the Senate again.
They want to give statehood to Puerto Rico for the same reason.
|
|
When Hawaii and Alaska were added to the Union, everyone was happy because the Hawaii senators were likely to be Dems and the Alaska senators were likely to be Repubs.

I'm guessing that if BLM had breached the capital building and put Pence on the run, Trump wouldn't have politely asked them to go home with a blown kiss and intimations of love.
I could be wrong... butttt......

It’s not by accident or oversight that the nation’s capital isn’t a state: The Founding Fathers wrote it into the Constitution. Article I, Section 8 provides explicitly for a national capital that would not be part of a state nor treated as a state, but rather a unique enclave under the exclusive authority of Congress — a neutral “district” in which representatives of all the states could meet on an equal footing to conduct the nation’s business.

@Granite - Debatable. There is a good argument that an Act of Congress will be sufficient. In any event, the likelihood of DC Statehood coming into being is extremely low. Plus, I am a big fan of Gingrich's idea of turning DC into a tax free (federal taxes) zone.

Two more Democrats in the Senate forever!
Puerto Rico next...two more Democrats in the Senate forever!
Maybe they should try for 8, just to ice the cake -- The US Virgin Islands and Guam are waiting!
Pack the Senate. Pack the Supreme Court. Destroy the Second Amendment so we can't fight back. Tax us into poverty and send trillions of dollars of money overseas, to be looted by politicians' kids like Hunter Biden.
Sounds like a recipe for a revolt! Oh wait, that started yesterday!

And eliminate the filibuster in the Senate to make sure they can ram through any legislation they want.
|

And free abortions for all!!!
Woohoo!!!!

If you said free poon
I'd follow you anywhere

DC Statehood: Not going anywhere in Congress. Not a priority for Biden. A local politician (Mayor of DC) is pushing the issue for her benefit (reelection in two years). For a number of other reasons, there will not be an additional states for the forseeable future.
Filibuster: What is left of the filibuster will stay in place. Biden and at least 4-5 other Dems want to keep the filibuster. In addition, it should be noted that revenue and spending bills can be passed in the Senate by a simple majority by a process called budget reconciliation. The 2017 tax cuts were passed by this process.
Supreme Court: While the left of the Dem party may want to the pack the Court the centrists, including Biden, are opposed. Expect Breyer to retire and Biden to nominate a youngster. Dem hope is that Roberts and Kavanaugh will be a moderating force (which isn't an unreasonable assumption).
Foreign Aid and Spending:
It's really a tiny part of the budget a fraction of what we spend on Social Security and Medicare. And the reason we do it is because the U.S is a global power and we want to have influence. It is like corporations that give to charity - you think they give out money because they are altruistic?
|
|
Transfer payments will be 100% of the federal budget in the not too distant future
Leaving nothing for defense
Or, really anything else for that matter
Can't wait to see you fuckers scramble for a chair when the music stops
|
|
if the US doesn't keep up with foreign aid...china will be right there with the money and predatory influence
