We are figuring out that we are going with what is called "droplet precautions" by infection control specialists. Infected people are constantly shedding the virus in a 6-foot bubble around them.
If you are smashed up against people in a crowded subway train, and if the person next to you has the virus, your mask probably doesn't fit well enough around your nose and cheeks to prevent you from inhaling the virus. The issue isn't the filter. Even the lowest-quality filter is good enough to filter out the virus. The issue is how well it fits around your nose and cheeks. The issue is also how well it fits around your chin. If you have facial hair between the mask and your skin, it will leak badly.
At the same time if you can stay 6 feet away from everyone else except for brief moments at, let's say, the checkout counter, you can get away with an bandana or a shirt or something where you are having to breathe through the material.
