Obviously that is in the back of his mind.

California is in a sense operating as a nation state. We have the size for it, plus that is what Trump suggested the states should do. So California has been operating that way even shipping excess supplies to other states. Newsome and Trump seem to have a working statesman like relationship.

California is a net contributor in taxes to the federal government, while Southern states are net drainers of federal funds,
California has a large budget surplus (as opposed to an enormous federal deficit),
California had the best response to the Coronavirus pandemic of any state...
...why the fuck is California still part of this country?

You have been drinking way to much of the Kool AID the various governors have been passing out for years. There is no real actual surplus in California.
Per the attached report California is fiscally ranked #42 out of the 50 states. The principal reason is massive unfunded pension liabilities due various government employees.
Also another report that was discussed on KNX 1070 radio indicated that Irvine was fiscally the best
city in the country with a $4,400 surplus for each taxpayer. Los Angeles had a deficit of over $6,000 for each taxpayer and the state of California has a deficit of over $22,000 for each taxpayer. They did not throw out numbers for San Francisco but stated it's deficit per taxpayer was the largest except for New York City.
Last year in a radio interview on KNX former LA Mayor Richard Riordan (the only businessman that has been Mayor in a long time) stated that the City of Los Angeles would have to file for bankruptcy within the next 5 years to get out from under all of it's commitments.
IMO the City and state will tax everything that moves in order to protect their pensions as long as possible. The bottom line is our elected officials in Sacramento are every bit as big a liar as Trump.
I do hope to be out of the state before that happens.

California continues to rape and pillage its own citizens so they currently are OK with being slightly on the upside in Federal taxes sent versus programs received.
Give it a few more years....more runaway spending and more losing of businesses and rich and middle income taxpayers and then we can see if that is the same ratio....as we escalate our pension liability, continue to bring in more lowest wage earning people through immigration, and drive wealthier people from the state, we will be upside down and in a whole lot of hurt.....
