Four percent of adults in LA County have had COVID-19
Apr 20 2020 04:48PM more by NigelCollins68

A study of the prevalence COVID-19 was conducted by the Los Angeles County Public Health Department and USC. They released the preliminary results at a press conference on Monday afternoon. Researchers tested a random sample of 850 adults in LA County for the presence of the antibody against COVID-19.

The results of the study indicated that the rate of infection for adults in LA County could be estimated at four percent. The number of adults infected with COVID-19 could be nearly one-half million (as opposed to the official number of thirteen thousand infected individuals).

While these numbers may be accurate for all adults in LA County, I think that the percent of infected adults is higher among the mainstream population, i.e., the kind of people who have jobs, take public transportation, and shop in grocery stores.

The infection rate among the floozies and skallywags around here is almost certainly higher than four percent. Take me, for example. I've had COVID-19. I'm all better now (thanks for asking).

My COVID-19 was nothing dramatic. I was out sick with a cold for one and one-half weeks. My temperature was elevated one degree, which did not even count as a fever. I had some body aches. I had some GI tract discomfort. I had to lay around. The important part is that It never went into my lungs. I never had a dry cough. (If anyone is going to have trouble with their lungs, that part of COVID-19 starts on day 9.)

This study shares some problems with the Santa Clara so-called study.

Wait for the peer review before you run with the headline.

The virus has an affinity for certain tissues including upper lungs, intestinal lining, and (oddly enough) the tongue. I guess that I felt the virus in those organs, but it never got too bad. For example, I felt the virus in my intestines, but I did not have diarrhea.

With the study by USC with LA Health Department ( confirmed by a separate Stanford study) say that 40 to 80 times more widely spread.
With same amount of confirmed cases.
Meaning this is less deadly than influenza.

So

When can we open up these restrictions.? Or do we have to have our politicians point fingers for more businesses to fail?

If the UCLA and Santa Clara studies are confirmed, then they could definitely inform our strategies moving forward.

However, I think it's still a mistake to compare C-19 with the flu. Irrespective of the actual number of people infected, the absolute number of deaths is still several times greater than the flu on a per-day basis. Furthermore, whereas more than half the country is routinely vaccinated against the flu, NO ONE has been vaccinated against C-19.

The best we can realistically hope for is that we can manage this virus so that it "only" kills a hundred thousand or so people a year until a vaccine is widely available. That's not an appealing tradeoff for avoiding another Great Depression, but we might have to swallow hard and accept the reality.

BTW, a vaccine is definitely not a sure thing. If you recall, there were high hopes for developing an HIV vaccine back in the 90's, and here we are 20-something years later and there's still nothing better than a cover for protecting yourself.
