I think the answer might depend on who you ask.

The recent dynamic between CA and how much the Fed's want give, or not give back to CA has to do with state policy on Sanctuary cities.

Go figure...

Daddy says you cant have your whole allowance if you want to let criminals sleep over.

Good Take JR... I'm curious if the people that are leaving California are taking their tax money with the. And the people that are coming in are not bringing tax money to the table.

That has been going on for quite awhile now.

CA is a state that used to be great and rightfully be a donor state. From agriculture to Tech hub leadership this state has been losing the upper echelon of "contributors" who move out.

But yet our leaders in Sacramento are more focused on policy that benefits and expands the lower rung of society while the people and businesses that make a state great leave.

Biggest question is who declares BK first, the state or a bunch of cities?

Revenues plunge, pensions coming due, rainy day fund gone and no printing press.

Time to break the union hold on Sacramento and cram down those pensions.

And the Hair thats running the state fades away

I'm not holding my breath that this state will ever elect anyone interested in fiscal restraint for reasons already stated.

Sacramento carries on like that 30-something yearold millennial with progressive dreams but moving back to mom and dad's garage and too scared to admit they are up to thier credit limit.

The worst thing Daddy can do is bail them out without insisting or forcing change.

Well, 2020 ain't over and you can take it to the bank that CA will be a huge recipient by end of year given how much the Feds are shoveling out, then include the plunge in CA taxes collected due to the government mandated shutdown.

Just sayin'

"California is a great places to visit, but you don't want to live there".

My mother told me this, some 30 years ago, and I didn't listen to her and thought she was nuts. But she has been proven to be correct.

As a former engineer in the aerospace industry, IMO when they killed the defense industry, the Golden State began the transition to the Fool's Golden State. And the downward trend has only intensified ever since.

This will get worse......as our Democratic leadership continues to push industry out of the state, there will be fewer middle class people paying taxes. The affluent will relocate their state of residency and still live here nearly half the time but NOT pay our exorbitant taxes.

We bring more unskilled minimum wage workers into the state and that assures we will never be a donor state again......

I've never seen so many conservatives on the same blog.
I wasn't expecting to hear of the serious financial issues facing CA for about
another 5 years but the shutdown has changed that.
Once the shutdown is lifted, I have the feeling that a lot of people, especially those
under 30 will be willing to take the risk of getting the virus. Young people tend to take
freedom over security. They want to live life, not be controlled by it.
In the final analysis, most of us will still be here, next year.
There was a report the stated that you have a 99.6% chance of surviving the virus..
Yet local politicians are willing to destroy lives in an attempt to save some.

It’s a truly amazing thing.

California is either the leader or among the leaders in

Technology
Entertainment
Agriculture
Defense
Tourism

In addition we have

Oil
Gold
Pharmaceuticals

I imagine you all can think of more

These categories should be enormously profitable to our state

California should be awash in money and like Alaska be able to share the largesse with ever citizen of the state.

Instead we have more homeless than anybody, high taxes, cities that look like third world countries.

Seriously, do you really want to turn the entire country over to the kind people who have been managing California?

I should mention that 99.6% chance of making it assumes 0.4% won’t. Out of 320,000,000 people, that would be 1.28 million people. Are all of you ok with that?

There should be a baseline safety net to help folks train for jobs and have a decent level of healthcare.

It's OK to help folks that need it. Abuse of the system is another thing tho.

I’m just responding to exactly what he said, but ok. Say testing never arrives as it should, therapeutics don’t either, and a vaccine doesn’t arrive until 2022. Should we just open up and let the virus work it’s way through the US population while isolating the most at risk? So let’s say 80% of the population ends up getting it, and the death rate (excluding some of the most vulnerable) is now 0.2%. That’s now about half a million dead. A 0.1% death rate would mean a quarter of a million dead. Are those loses acceptable to you?

As many people died in a month as in the Vietnam War, and we want to open the economy up immediately, despite the risks. Wow!

"As many people died in a month as in the Vietnam War, and we want to open the economy up immediately, despite the risks. Wow! "

3 months not 1 month, granted still a lot of people but will most likely resemble a bad influenza year. Still looking for your model's stats on the number of people who will die over the next year from crushing the economy........ooops, the model doesn't do that so we'll just get another misinformed opinion from you.

And, nobody says they want to totally re-open the economy.

There is NO statistical evidence that social distancing works, in fact, the correlation is practically zero. Correlation is HIGH for density and prolonged travel on mass transit. One size fits all solution is completely wrong.

You're a fraud Night-Rider, the evidence is in and you will keep ratcheting down your number to get to reality someday but never admit you're a fraud and just plain wrong.

give it up, your judgement sucks

Unfortunately states can't declare bankruptcy.
Cities although can. Once a city goes BK their union contracts become obsolete, or null and void. At that point they, city government, can either renegotiate or tell the union to F-off and hire non union labor thus breaking the union strangle hold that infests most cities in California like calpers.
Would love to see calpers get broken.
