Shit I remember where he lived in Newport Harbor on Harbour Island. He had some old power boat. He wasn't a sailor really and never did the yacht club thing.
I used to race & cruise on a few large sailboats down in Newport back in college days.
I think there's far more people today that categorically dislike John Wayne yet they were born after he died. It's that whole progressive identity politics thing.
If your have some sort of monument like an airport in your name and if you have ever said anything offensive to a group on a certain list your "bad". It doesnt matter how much good you've done overall.
Take Christopher Columbus for example... the guy has a holiday in his name changed to "Indigenous Peoples Day" because a group of people decided to pin the blame on him for all the slight to Native American Indians. Even though Columbus was dead a good 300 years after shit went down.

JW may have helped bring out a certain ideal in how Americans see themselves, but it was at the expense of others. Those consequences are still being felt by the living and the hurt is still raw.
I was in my late 20's when Wayne died. He did not live a life hating people and I sure dont remember him being openly hated. But maybe I'm being naive...
He did do a Playboy interview once and said some things about African Americans... I'm neither promoting or ignoring what was said.. But..

He was patriotic and loyal to the United States. Yes, he hated...but he hated those who disrespected and hated the U.S. the Flag or anything about this country of ours....if that is wrong, so be it.
In the 1970s, he did an interview for Playboy Magazine. In it, he said some things that we would consider disparaging to black people (not sure what they wanted to be called in the 1970s i.e negroes, coloreds, blacsk, African-Americans, etc.). However, the things he said were really not out of line when considering the context of the times in the 1970s.
And they want to drag him through the mud. A great actor, who loved his country and family, and raised tens of millions of dollars for charity.
And libtards would love nothing more than to remove him from history in disgrace.

You cannot take today's context and apply it backwards......and say that those people or those events were bad.
But stupid people take things out of context all the time.....nothing is in a vacuum. You have to know what was said or done right before and right after. And what were others in that era saying and doing.

He made this claim about Native Americans: "selfishly trying to keep (North America) to themselves."
He generalized a whole group with this: "I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people."
Wayne made ignorant racist comments back in 1971. It shows just how closed off he was from the real world, non unlike current Hollywood is now. I guess that is a tradition with stardom.

MLK was assassinated in 1968. He wanted equality for all Americans.
Stan Lee & Jack Kirby created the Black Panther in 1966. BP is the first black super hero, and the king of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. Wakanda is the most advanced nation on Earth in the Marvel universe. The Black Panther character predates the Black Panther Party.
Stan & Jack were two non-black guys who also served in WWII. Jack co-created Captain America, who on the cover of his first comic, punched Hitler. The comic predates America's involvement in WWII. Stan co-created the Falcon in 1969. The Falcon is Captain's partner in the modern era. The Falcon is the second black superhero.
It's crazy how Stan & Jack were more in sync with the world than John Wayne. They also created other prominent, dignified black characters. I will proudly salute the contributions made by Stan & Jack over John Wayne any day.
My great uncle served in WWII, despite dealing with racism here, and abroad. My uncle served in Vietnam.
John Wayne did not serve for various reasons. One reason was due to being an adulterer, like Bill Clinton & Donald Trump. Wayne was a studio tough guy, not unlike these rappers.
Not known to many he was an alcoholic. Apparently he had his demons. And he often expressed it with rage. He took this anger out on his wives and children, battering all of his wives. I would not list him as a great American.
Liberals especially liberal males are just a bunch of whiners who can't accept responsibility for their own miserable existence. How many on here who think John Wayne was evil were even alive when he was? They just heard about him from their other miserable sort. When they use the cry of racism it makes them feel important in some way, of course they can't even wipe their own ass.
I guess that im a lib but i can tell you growing up in a bad situation in the 60s and 70s, i looked up to him. He was good for us all. The same with Reagan, he made me proud of being an American when i didn't have a lot to feel proud about.
