Sorry for your loss.
I went through that about 10 years ago. Lost a beautiful Golden Retriever to very similar symptoms. Had to put her down and we all miss her.

Been there 3 times. It doesn't get easier. I know our dogs had good lives with plenty of love, which they returned five-fold.
We were asked once, what's the best thing about having a dog? Our answer was the love that they give you. They asked us what was the worst part of having a dog. We said, they die.

The Rainbows Bridge Poem
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

As I read about Blu, I came across this story about how much dogs mean. This man saved a dog he didn't know by giving mouth to mouth to get him to breathe again. I bet the dog now just wants to play ball again...

I just celebrated 10 years with my dog and I live in fear of the day you just had. I've worked from home almost all that time and he's my constant companion.

So sorry for loss. Been there myself so many times. The hurt never changes. My book case is just about filled with cedar boxes of my friends. And when time arrives we all be placed together and set into the wind.

I'm sorry you have to go through that. My Golden was 12 when I was getting ready to fight with him for the old age problems. He had home cooking half of his life until we were too busy. I think the dog food got him; he had cancer. I also brought him a baby mattress from eBay for the yard because he likes to sleep outside on the concrete.
The week before he still escaped the yard and played fetch with a neighbor. Then one night he looked strange and very inactive. Before we can do anything, the next day we found him passed away peacefully under his favorite tree. It was hard to deal with the aftermath when it came so suddenly. He's still with us in the garbage and pictures on the wall.

I dread the day I have to make that decision with my big boy.
I now have his puppy with me.

I am SOOOOOO sorry to hear about your loss. I have 2 of my own and they are the love of my life. People who dont have dogs, or pets, cant imagine it. My dogs give UNCONDITIONAL love and I love the HECK outa them. RIP Blu!
