The reason doctors were prescribing it was to slow the progression of the virus not to prevent it.

It is a drug with minimal side effects. Millions take it every year for travel. I wouldn't want to take it indefinitely though.

What can go wrong?
I don't know of anyone who is taking this drug with no symptoms. Hopefully nothing will go wrong with him but if he takes it for a long time there are side affects especially for an obese dude like him. It can affect people who have underling heart disease. He said he's been taking it a couple of weeks.
It could also make some people try to hoard the drug thinking its a cure.

Take it easy folks. The media continues to spread misinformation and fear. Hydroxychloroquine has been around for decades and its side effects are well known. If you don't have a heart condition, you are not likely to have any problems. Remember, a doctor has to prescribe it. If you give it to a covid patient that is close to death, they will die anyway.
I read that may front line health care workers are taking hydroxychloroquine in case they get infected to improve their recovery. It seems reasonable that given WH peeps have contracted the virus, the WH doctor, the person responsible for the health of the leader of the free world, would provide it to the president and monitor for any possible adverse reactions.
Lastly, the reported death rate for highly impacted counties is about 500 deaths per million people. That means that the average person has a 99.95% chance of not dying from the virus.

I been taking it since I were two and I tell ya what . I feel more hydrated than ever  thanks to the hydro part and I’ve never gotten a zit! Thanks to the oxy part 😉 at times it has an effect where I pass out cuz the chloro part but I arise with a regal swagger ! All I know is I have hydroxychloroquine in my medicine cabinet. I have azithromycin and zinc too. If I get minor or moderate symptoms of COVID, I'm NOT taking it. Not enough evidence.
I rather try something else I got in my cabinet that actually passed a NYC observational study with flying colors.

We are doing more and more testing, so it would follow that the case count goes up along with the related deaths.
Also your handy little chart, notice that India with 4x our population has far fewer cases reported. HCQ is an OTC drug there... Something to think about...
