As far as I understood, Trump can not send US military against its own people unless a state governor asked for it (example Pete Wilson asked for it during LA riot), unless Insurrection Act was invoked.
He sent military police to DC because WDC is not a state.
However, nobody is aware that Trump declared the Act. So I believe he wanted to threaten each state, because that is what he always does.
Sending military to its own people is ONLY done by dictators to silence its people from demonstrating, and it is outrageous to even think about it. He is a total fool.

Are you aware that President Obama visited India during his time in office? He was absolutely dead set on visiting a particular museum there. Had to be done. The Secret Service told him it was too dangerous, as the 1/4 mile walk from the road to the museum would leave him far too vulnerable to attack or sniper fire.
Well, Obama threw a petulant fit. He wanted to go to that museum. So the Secret Service had to create last minute plans to have a 1/4 mile long tunnel constructed along the path, so that the President could visit a museum. Then they found out that the temperature inside the tunnel exceeded 120 degrees in the afternoon! Solution? Air conditioning in the tunnel!
How much did this cost? Millions upon millions of dollars, so Obama could visit a museum in India.
President Trump has violent protesters cleared out of a two block area outside the White House so he can walk to visit an Episcopal church that was firebombed by those very protesters...a church where every President since James Madison has prayed and worshiped...to make a statement that this will not stand, that violence and arson and looting will not be tolerated...
A church where ABRAHAM LINCOLN WALKED ALONE EVERY NIGHT TO PRAY DURING THE CIVIL WAR!!! This church was burned by the rioters and thugs that were pushed back by police.
And somehow Donald Trump is the asshole here. Go figure.

According to this excellent description of what happened around Trump's photo-ops, Rev Gini Gerbasi said "occasionally some aggressive encounters with the police, it was largely calm. There were a few tense moments, but it was peaceful"
So no looters or gang members there. In another words, Trump administration acted like a fuhrer on its own people.
